I can't see how we would spend money on Finch Farm, we don't even own it. Will just increase the value of it when we eventually buy it back, if we ever do.

Its tax reasons. There is a tax saving spending it on Finch Farm and also not owning it our selves.

Its taken out of our accounts and therefore isn't liable for corporation tax.

This is why its economical to the club to not own Finch Farm and to invest on it.

The amount we pay in rent and investment costs is less than 25 years of taxes and depreciation. If it wasn't we would own finch farm ourselves.

Martinez likes it obviously since it allows him to take player development up a level again.

be nice if our owners made that sort of investment into the business themselves

That has nothing to do with Martinez ambition though.

But we know what the answer to this is. These directors want the club to run as a standalone entity and to run based on its own income. There's no easy answer.

Martinez may prove a game changer however. Along with additional tv monies if used appropriately.

So when we finished 4th and qualified for Champions league you said to yourself " If only we had a good manager who was ambitious "

Are you really asking me what i was thinking at the exact same time as Liverpool had just won the champions league? Like everyone else at the time, yes i did wish we had a manager and a club set up able to win things, but we didnt.
We have the manager now and the set up of the club and the financial situation has moved forward, for these reasons there is no need to worry about selling players like Ross

Just as Matt correctly wrote
Let's be honest, times were much different back then, we now have an ambitious manager, better financially now and no stubbsy to give him 'advice'.

Without wishing to be rude I'm assuming you aren't a tax accountant

You pay corporation tax on profits and can carry across losses from previous years - we have £15m of carried across losses. It will be a long time until we pay corporation tax.

The difference between Moyes and Martinez.

Martinez has the ambition and has adopted the strategy that says we play 'football' and to be in and around 4th spot or winning stuff every year.

He's decided not all the money from last year will have gone on transfers (January 2014). Its going on upgrading finch farm and to keep pushing the development of our players every year.

So Martinez deciding to invest some money in extra facilities at Finch Farm shows his ambition but Moyes being actively involved in the design and fit out of the training centre in the first place (including merging the academy into the facility) didn't show ambition.

I know people like to rewrite history to show Moyes as some idiot but he took over the club at one of our lowest points and bought us back to the point where top 6 is expected. He deserves respect even if you don't like him.

Its not just corporation taxes. Its capital gains and all sorts of capital allowances that the likes of the landlords (Liverpool City Council) and more specifically we as a football club can take on any investments we make on what is essentially a commercial property (Finch Farm).

Erm, we don't own Finch Farm because of that at all.

Moyes had 10 years to invest further in Finch Farm.

It is Martinez that came in and said he wanted more in his first season at the club.

Hahahahahahahaha.

I bet he's still got those posters on his wall that he worships every night.

Moyes was ambitious, if he wasn't he would still be our manager right now. And remember, if Bill had his way Moyes would still be manager now.

Some odd things being posted in this thread.

Moyes may have been 'ambitious', though he wasn't with Everton, nor was he adventurous in his tactics or his style.

His inability to take risks, be it a lack of bravery, or a misplaced arrogance in his own dated, negative methods, were very grating towards the end at Everton, and were ultimately what caused his downfall at Man Utd.

Cheers for the link, interesting statement on it.

In most cases, you cannot claim capital allowances against the purchase price or other investment in land, buildings or property.

So what is the reason we don't own Finch Farm.

Because tax is one major reason I can think of to think why we don't own Finch Farm.

Because we could not afford to do it ourselves. We took a short term solution that will cost us financially in the long run. Bellefield and Netherton land sales should have given us enough cash to fund the build ourselves, but we needed that cash to survive.
