I think the longer it goes like this without any word from either side the greater the chance of a deal being struck.

I could see something like a three year contract, long enough to give the club security regarding the value of the player and long enough to prove that we are serious about challenging for the CL.

Short enough for the player to allow him to leave if the club doesn't become a serious challenger or if the relationship with the manager breaks down.

I have no idea how the talks went, but somehow I cannot help but feel the agent may have overplayed his hand and made demands the club were not prepared to meet.

The player is under absolutely no pressure whatsoever to make any sort of statement. He holds the aces here. Everton cant even sell him if he doesnt want to go.

Absolutely.
He even will have the chance to help Everton retain their under 23 title as that is where he will spend the entire season playing his football.

But on a plus side surely this must mean there is a will from both sides, else we would have released a statement saying he is available for sale or Barkley would have saying he won't sign a contract alerting clubs before they sign anyone else in the same position.

The deadline only existed in Koeman's head. The agent has, rightly, laughed it off as he negotiates with the club. There's no proof of the following, but I wouldn't be surprised if Koeman has been slapped down by the board in regards to his comments too.

He should never have opened his trap - it was transparently stupid of him to do so.
