Ross Barkley

Need to secure his signing. I want to see him as a captain in relatively near future. Sell Stones...Sell Lukaku WHAT EVER...but keep our own here. Bound to become club great if he stays long term.

Agreed. The other two don't 'get' Everton, but Ross does. Want him here till he retires. Whatsmore, we can get £100m for them 2, then build an even better team around Ross.

Here's another...

Give him the Captaincy Roberto!

Everton ready to offer Ross Barkley huge new deal as Roberto Martinez plans to build team around him

The Toffees boss believes the England midfielder is key to his long-term plans and he can lead club to glory if he signs huge new deal

Roberto Martinez will offer Ross Barkley a huge new deal to keep him at the centre of his vision for Everton.

The Blues boss believes the England midfielder is key to his long-term plans and is ready to lead the club to glory – if he wants the responsibility.

But Martinez accepts the next four months could be vital to how Barkley sees his future and whether the 22-year-old believes he should commit to Goodison.

Talks are likely to open at the end of the season, when Barkley will have two years left on his current contract.

“We will look in the summer,” said Martinez. “Ross is a player you can build a project on.

“I’ve just seen a big, big difference this season. Before it was all about trying to give him information and make him a type of a player, this season he’s the one who is almost asking for the information he needs.

“He has 11 goals too. It is the amount of chances he creates, sometimes by not even touching the ball.

“He creates chances because teams are using one and two players constantly to stop him. So his influence is huge.

“When you do that it’s because you’re an experienced player who says, ‘I know what I am and how important I am for the team’.”

Barkley scored twice in a man-of-the-match display against Newcastle on Wednesday, and will again be key when Everton visit Stoke on Saturday.

He is a lifelong Blue, but Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have shown an interest since he broke into the Three Lions squad.

Asked if it was realistic to believe he could keep Barkley, Martinez said: “It’s a great question. When you want to build a project around a player at Everton you need a player who wants to take that role.

“It’s one thing as manager wanting that, but if the player doesn’t feel the same way you can’t do it.

“From now until the end of the season will have a massive bearing on how we’re going to approach next season, and the role of Ross Barkley will be vital to what we can achieve.”

The captain shouts, not bad really.

Next season, in the odd cup game or when older lads are not playing, i would look at giving him the armband now and again, just to test the water with him.....What harm can it do to try??? ossy does it now and again.

Could work wonders for him, and us.

Giving him the armband whenever Jags isn't there wouldn't be a bad move. Barry is a fantastic pro and has been one our best performers this year and whilst he has earned the respect needed to wear the armband in the absence of captain or vice captain just how much more would it mean for a lifelong blue to be given it?

To be honest though I hope we don't have any times when Jags is playing for the rest of the season. When he plays we look a lot more organised.

You're probably right, every time he gets the ball you expect him to do something magic with it, b

This was the exact same thing I was saying to a mate the other day, he might lose the ball but he wants it straight back once we gain possession, doesn't look to hide even if the crowd gets on his back, speaks volumes that. Same when he's having a bad game, still tries to get on the ball, still tries to make things happen. Quality player, and he's one of us, we should try to remember that.

100% this

Thats all fair enough.

One thing though, i think its harsh to say he cant string 2 sentences together....we dont know what hes like in the dressing room.

As an aside, what type of captain would you like after Jags, and who would you choose?

If we presume Jags has another season left in him, then the obvious choices are Coleman, McCarthy and Mirallas.

Osman and Pienaar are now squad players rather than starters, and could leave / retire this summer. Kone is possibly about to become a 3rd choice striker, Barry is not likely to still be playing in two seasons' time, Hibbert and Howard are both likely to be finished by the end of this season and Baines sadly doesn't show the leadership qualities. So that's all the older players.

Gibson? Never fit. Lennon, Cleverley or Funes Mori? Not been here long enough IMHO. Oviedo is a squad player, not guaranteed a starting spot on merit. Everyone else is too young IMHO.

So Coleman, McCarthy and Mirallas are the three candidates.

Mirallas would be a VERY divisive choice amongst the fans: for every person that would have him in the starting XI every week there is another person who wants him shot and then thrown into the Mersey. He'd be my choice, but I can see why the club won't ever give him that role.

So Coleman or McCarthy... both good candidates, hard to choose between them. Coleman seems a bit more fiery to me, and McCarthy seems to have trouble keeping injury-free. But then again, a central midfielder is surely in a physically better position from which to lead a team than a right-back would be? Coleman is a couple of years older.... McCarthy is ginger. Decisions, decisions.

Ross's time will come, but I'd give him at least two more seasons to just develop into the best he can be before I would burden him with captaincy.

I hope he becomes this generation's Colin Harvey! It took him a while to win over the fans too before being truly loved and appreciated for the excellent player he became. Trophies to follow hopefully. And for what it is worth Ross has got a few more tricks in his locker although I don't think he will ever be a great tackler again. Different players and different eras but it would be great for this generation to have a local lad to be truly proud of who did his best stuff for us.

All Ross has to do to get the crowd off his back is to release the ball earlier! Even if it goes wrong, we can see what he was trying to do and applaud it! It is when he hangs on, hangs on, hangs on, then loses the ball or passes it back! I know he is young, but if he doesnt have the confidence to trust his instincts and have a punt, he may always be erratic!
