I just want that new contract signed. God knows why he got a 4-year deal when all the other stars got 5-year deals.
Probably to do with a compromise between Everton and his agent over his wages. He's on good wages but he's behind quite a few first team players. Shorter contract means it has to be negotiated sooner and so a wage increase was due sooner.

Was probably promised a new improved deal if showed the improvement he has. Signing a 4 year initially meant if we were to offer him a new deal it would be a year earlier than the other lads.

Just my thinking
I hope so, I also cannot wait for the day he signs a 5 year deal, also although I'm pinching the idea off Toffetv but I'd make him captain, from next season. Like the RS did with Slippy Me despite Hypia still being at the club.

I disagree with the captain shouts to be honest. Let him keep doing what he's doing and improving as he goes without any extra burden. I don't think he's the right type of player for that yet.

Agree, particularly as media work is so much a part of being a Premier league captain and Ross, although improving, still doesn't look entirely comfortable doing it. Could well come with time, Rooney was very awkward to start with and now is England club and country captain, but for now think it best for him to just concentrate on his own game.

Would also mean stripping the captaincy off Jags which would be a horrible kick in the teeth to him.

Very much the truth, the lad just doesnt need the extra pressure at the moment, hes honestly gonna need our support after the Summer, the country will expect and the country will demand scapegoats.

Everton will look to secure Ross Barkley on a new long-term contract this summer, with Roberto Martínez admitting he wants to build his team around the gifted midfielder.

Barkley will have two years remaining on his current £60,000-a-week deal at the end of the season and, as with the four-year contract he signed in 2014, Evertonhope to reward the 22-year-old’s progress with improved terms.

Manchester City are one of several Premier League clubs to have shown interest in the England international in the past but Martínez insists Barkley is central to his plans for the club, and that the boyhood Evertonian wants that role at Goodison Park.

The Everton manager said: “We will probably look at it in the summer. As I’ve said before, Ross is not a young man any more. He’s a player you can build a project on. When you want to build a project it is about a player who wants to play for Everton and wants to take that role. It is one thing as a manager wanting to do something, if the player doesn’t feel the same way then you cannot do it.

“But at the moment we have to concentrate on what we can achieve from now until the end of the season. What you are going to do in the final 12 games of the season will allow you to have a real strong ending, and that’s where the focus is. The FA Cup is another real strong focus for us, and the role of Ross Barkley will be vital to what we can achieve.”

Martínez revealed Barkley is not the only player lined up for a new contract at Everton, with the club having an option to extend Bryan Oviedo’s deal and Muhamed Besic due a pay rise after making over 25 Premier League appearances. “We look at every player’s situation,” he explained.

“We’ve got Bryan Oviedo who is out of contract in the summer but we have an option and we would like to do something before then. Mo Besic has triggered a clause which means we need to look into his contract. Those are the ones that are most imminent and everyone else we will look into in the summer.”

Barkley has made significant strides operating in the No10 role at Everton this season, with his two penalties against Newcastle United on Wednesday taking the midfielder to 11 goals in 31 games. His manager believes improved confidence, decision-making and increased responsibility have contributed to the 22-year-old’s improvement.

Martínez added: “I’ve just seen a big difference this season in Ross. Before it was all about trying to give him information and make him a type of a player. This season has been very different because he’s the one who wants clarifications and is asking for the information he needs. It shows he has the confidence he needs.

“There was an action against Newcastle when he tracked Andros Townsend back all the way, and won the ball back. That wasn’t his role. But in the same way that’s the decision making we are working on. He sensed danger and reacted, and it means he has developed from a young lad who only does what you tell him into someone who knows what he has to do, and wants help in knowing what is expected in those situations. That’s a big difference. When you do that it is because you are an experienced player who says ’I know what I am and how important I am for the team’.

“He has 11 goals but also creates a lot of chances for others, sometimes by not even touching the ball. He creates chances because teams are using one and two players constantly to try to stop him. His influence is huge and he’s going to have a different test week by week. Sometimes man marking, sometimes two players to stop him and that’s the test he will have until the end of the season.”
if he doesn't sign a new deal, i hope all the biffs who slate him are ever so proud of themselves, morons to a man

Does it apply any more pressure these days on a player though mate really? Honestly can't say that it has put pressure on Jagielka or Barry in that role. More of a honorific these days and think if anything it may pipe down a few of the LGS boo boys

Last part is sad but true, you just know that the likes of all the London based players will get a free pass when England flops - Deli Ali, Kane, Cahill etc and the rs players Henderson, Milner meanwhile Baines and Barkley will get crucified in the press, honestly don't give a flying one about England, but a couple of world class goals from Barkley hopefully will shut them all up before we limp out

Please stop this. I normally think your posts are spot on and up there with @Joey66 and @davek on here but here you're verging on real whopperism. This cult of Barkley is embarrassing.

First of all there's a massive difference between those fans as you call them that "slate" Barkley and those that simply don't think he's the Scouse Messi and walks on water. I've seen few, if any, of the former. I've not read any on here and nor have I seen or heard real critics at the match.

I think a lot of the negative noises that do sometimes surround Barkley at the match are groans of frustration and/or disappointment rather than anything else. Yes there's probably the old fella a few rows behind that says he is s#### when he fails to pull off a clever pass or loses possession too easily. But that's more a lack of vocabulary than anything else. That man probably doesn't really think he's s#### he just can't articulate anything better in the heat of the moment. Fans watching on TV or hearing the game on the radio perhaps don't sometimes remember the passion of seeing it live. If Barkley is driving forward on a 50 yard run through the middle of the park and holding off two opposition players in the process I'm on the edge of my seat and standing up like everyone around me. If then, at the crucial moment, he holds on to the ball too long and misses the simple pass to let in Lukaku or Dell then I'm angry and frustrated like any other fan. That's just a natural human reaction isn't it? The cold hard analysis should probably applaud the move he's made to advance the game but that's easier said than done.

No Evertonian wants Barkley to fail. Nobody with even half a brain can seriously say he's not very good. Nor can they deny he has moments of magic and a huge amount of potential.

There are clear areas he needs to improve on and there are still too many games where he's largely ineffective.

And as for the idea of making him captain.........not in a month of Sundays! He can't string two sentences together and he doesnt have the drive or aggression of a Rooney or a Slippy to compensate. Ultimately he's still young and an extra burden would be just hugely detrimental in my opinion.

Thats all fair enough.

One thing though, i think its harsh to say he cant string 2 sentences together....we dont know what hes like in the dressing room.

As an aside, what type of captain would you like after Jags, and who would you choose?
