I was delighted to read the stories that
Everton want to talk to
Ross Barkley about a new contract in the summer.
And I was particularly thrilled by Roberto Martinez's comment that Ross is "a player you can build a project around."
I agree entirely with the manager, but if I was Ross, or one of his representatives, there's one clause I would be asking to be inserted into any imminent talks.
And it wouldn't be anything to do with money or length of deal.
I would be asking for Ross Barkley to be made captain of the club when the position next becomes available.
Phil Jagielka is an excellent skipper, but he's 33 and if Ross does sign a contract extension the armband could be changing some time during the duration of his new deal.
It's a few years since we've had a local lad leading the Blues out. I think Alan Stubbs was probably the last, then before that it was Waggy (Dave Watson).
And I firmly believe that having a local lad leading the club out makes a difference.
Chelsea take great pride in John Terry being their skipper, while across the park they had Steven Gerrard for a long time.
In my mind it definitely adds something to a club. Local players have the full feeling for the club in their blood.
They know about its history, they know what makes the fans tick and they know what matters to people.
And I also think that the extra responsibility would add something to Ross's game.
He has been excellent this season – and we need to prove to Ross that we can match his ambitions when they sit down to talk – but being captain of the club would, I think, help him.
He has accepted even more responsiblity this season and showed he can handle it.
Ross Barkley, Everton captain, has a nice ring to it.
