Liverpool fans and the media really do need to look deeper as to why they didn't ever win a title. Whilst Gerrard was in the team he played with defenders like Carragher Hyppia Henchoz Agger, midfielders like Alonso Mascherano Redknapp, Hamann, Berger, Mcmanaman and strikers like Owen Fowler Torres and Suarez. Despite this they mustered two title challenges in his career. Why if he was such a world beater was this the case? United were winning leagues with inferior players at times. Can't have all been down to Fergie. There were several seasons they were stronger on paper than the champions but limited themselves pandering to Gerrard.

Firstly your naming players from about a 20 year period, they didn't all play in the same team it was always Gerrard and a couple of other good players and a load of ansolute cack, because they only mustered two title challenges is that solely his fault? You can't be world class if you never won the league but lifted the champions league eufa fa and league cup ( scored in finals for them all!

Obviously not gonna agree here mate! Think if he had been an Everton player you would see it differently but hey ho

Come in mate your making out he was awful for England! England have been [Poor language removed] for years, he has his bad days like everybody else, not like we have had the greatest managers to work with over the years!

He was okay for England, but he was never the player the media/pundits would have us believe, and there lies the problem, the only people who believed him to be world class (apart from you) were the media, pundits and a lot deluded kopites, even my mate who is the most deluded, biased Kopite in the world didn't put him in the 'world class' bracket, he actually rated Alonso the better of the two (and I wouldn't rate Alonso world class) saying the biggest mistake the RS ever made was letting Alonso go.

  • Gerrard was world class for Liverpool, but didn't perform for England. To be fair, who does?
  • Having said that, Gerrard is a distinctively different type of player to Barkley imo. Gerrard was all about the glory moments, edge of the box shot, hollywood balls etc etc, but Ross, for me, will be more the player to keep it tight, move the ball, and still have the ability to have a crack from 15-20 yards. Whilst Gerrard will be remembered for his goals, Ross will be remembered for his turns. Sounds ridiculous, but true imo.
  • Just how two-footed is Ross btw? Only other truely 2 footed player in our squad is Oviedo imo, although Mirallas can use his left, and for these players it makes a huge difference. Where you know the likes of Lennon, Deulofeu and Rom will work it on to their favoured foot, for Ross and Oviedo, there is genuine doubt as to which side they will shift the ball onto. A top class attribute for me.

Got told a story by a lad who used to be a performance analyst at Everton, when still in the youth side, we were playing Chelsea youth, Ross turns up for the match and decides to play the entire game left footed, he basically got told dont be a tit, but goes out and does it anyway, he got MOTM

Can't see the Scholes comparisons. Perhaps with the younger version who got into positions behind the striker to score but Scholes always had a wondrous passing range both short and long allowing him to control games in a way few others can (Gerrard and Lampard were praised for their Hollywood balls but neither could control a game, impact it yes but both needed an Alonso, Makelele behind them to set the tempo, hence why they worked abysmally together for England).

I don't think Barkley quite has that, I think he is better at doing it than Gerrard or Lampard was but not in Scholes/Pirlo/Xavi class (not because he's young but because he just doesn't seem to play that way or have the brain or range for it)

I'd see him more as an Iniesta or Zidane type player (not a direct comparison before someone calls me a kopite). As in he has the supreme technique required to link play anywhere in midfield, can punish the opposition offensively, and can impact the game and influence the outcome on an individual level.

What is beyond doubt is he is already one, if not the premium attacking midfielder in the premier league and is head and shoulders above some of the players in his position internationally. Leagues above Henderson, Milner, Lallana, Delph, Mason etc.

Dele Alli is a good player but I don't think he has done anything Ross hasn't done. If they swapped shirts all the hype would only be about one player and that would be Ross. If he was at Liverpool Spurs or United he'd be getting the credit he deserves for the outstanding season he's having rather than getting knocked pillar to post every time he plays for Englsnd and doesn't win the game singlehandedly for them.
I said the same a few weeks back, after Jamie carragher had put on Twitter that Ali had over taken Ross. It would be totally different if Barkley played for a media darling club and Ali played for us. I don't think dier would be anywhere Near the England team if he was at Everton.

I've lost count how many times I've seen his goal at palace, don't get me wrong it was class. But remember the goal Barkley scored at Newcastle 2 yrs. Runs from from his own box and then at their box he takes on to his weaker left foot takes it past 3 of their players and smashes into the net.

That goal was basically brushed under the carpet by the media. I hardly saw it replayed, Wasn't up for goal of the season and didn't win goal of the month, I think Rooney scored from the half way line that month.

Imagine if Ali scored a similar goal next week, the whole cockney media,BBC Sky and talksport wiuld be in meltdown

jonjo tictac head has been in team of the week on bbc twice since joining newcastle for displays that would get ross booed off by the park end, also in between Ross utterly dominating him, in fact on that note we've seen Ross get then better of bowling ball head, kante, toure and co at city, the southampton midfield, and generally has strong games against the better teams

Liverpool legend or not Stevie G was absolutely world class for a long long time, could have played for any team in the world at his best, playing how good he was for the fact who he played for
He was very good but never world class in a million years.
Prototype of the idfeal English premier league player for me. Run all day. Never say die attitude. Clean striker of the ball. Looked absolutely mustard against the likes of WBA, Norwich, Southampton and, dare I say it, us. Never saw him dominate a game against top opposition.
