Ross Barkley

Fully agree the Stoke home game was what opened my eyes to the scholes comparison he had 97% pass completion I watched game twice & didn't see him give it away so not sure why not 100%.

Whenever closed down he simply turned away & moved the ball without ever looking in danger of giving it away.

Personally think he has more of a reemebelnce to yaya toure than Gerard

Though about the Scholes comparison for ages, from when I seen a vid of him playing for England U21's V Italy, had bossed the game, Italy could not get near him, he created loads of chances, small short passes, held the ball well...class.

The Italian fans were raving about it, its a very Italian way, they love the art & craft of that kind of performance.

I see Ross as a player that will do that AND the Yaya/Gerrard storming forward smashing a winner, all in the same game....very very rare in any player to ever have these attributes.

I'm going to step out of this thread for a while. I've had my say and I wish Barkley proves me wrong. In real life you'd see me screaming support and cheering his every move forward. COYB.

Barkley is twice the passer NOW, than Steven G was at his pomp.

As good as he is as it, 'Stevie G la' is the classic kick and rush, string british player.

Liverpool legend or not Stevie G was absolutely world class for a long long time, could have played for any team in the world at his best, playing how good he was for the fact who he played for

Can't see the Scholes comparisons. Perhaps with the younger version who got into positions behind the striker to score but Scholes always had a wondrous passing range both short and long allowing him to control games in a way few others can (Gerrard and Lampard were praised for their Hollywood balls but neither could control a game, impact it yes but both needed an Alonso, Makelele behind them to set the tempo, hence why they worked abysmally together for England).

I don't think Barkley quite has that, I think he is better at doing it than Gerrard or Lampard was but not in Scholes/Pirlo/Xavi class (not because he's young but because he just doesn't seem to play that way or have the brain or range for it)

I'd see him more as an Iniesta or Zidane type player (not a direct comparison before someone calls me a kopite). As in he has the supreme technique required to link play anywhere in midfield, can punish the opposition offensively, and can impact the game and influence the outcome on an individual level.

What is beyond doubt is he is already one, if not the premium attacking midfielder in the premier league and is head and shoulders above some of the players in his position internationally. Leagues above Henderson, Milner, Lallana, Delph, Mason etc.

Dele Alli is a good player but I don't think he has done anything Ross hasn't done. If they swapped shirts all the hype would only be about one player and that would be Ross. If he was at Liverpool Spurs or United he'd be getting the credit he deserves for the outstanding season he's having rather than getting knocked pillar to post every time he plays for Englsnd and doesn't win the game singlehandedly for them.

Could play for any team in the world but strangely not for the England team? Great player to individually impact a game if you built a team around him. The fact they never won the league despite having teams with good defences and attacks is because he couldn't control games. He needed the set up to be about getting the best out of him so when he didn't turn up Liverpool didn't. They indulged one player over the team because no manager was strong enough to put aside Liverpool's greatest son's quest for glory for the good of the team. Rafael almost did, moving him right wing and number 10 and getting brilliant seasons from him, but he always wanted to be in the middle playing superman hitting Hollywood balls. A few cups is sadly the level he was at, not a true great.

Loads of top players don't perform that well for there country, Paul scholes was never brilliant for England. Gerrard was used on the left under Sven,
