Ross Barkley

I think I meant Brazil 2014 actually. Forgot what year it is!
I thought SA 2010 but it was Brazil when Jags got blamed for England's exit wasn't it? He didn't recover for ages. Stones getting all the flak at the moment is similar. And Barkley will need to shine cos the press/armchairs all love Delle Alli and Sterling

Sterling gets loads of stick tbh.

Form has dipped recently, but overall, I've been made up with him this season. This was February;

Dug out out of the crap a few times, Reading an example that springs to mind - only to be let down - Bournemouth...

Not helped by Martinez employing him in a deeper role, like Yesterday vs Man Utd. he is a liability there and Lukaku becomes isolated. For me, he's central in the final third, or nowhere.

Not his fault when he gets the ball the only pass available is a backwards one to the centre half.

Most of his passes yesterday were, as usual, back to the player who passed to him, or raking passes trying to find Geri, he hardly ever spotted Lukakus runs and could have put him in a few times. His play/passing is nearly always 'measured' or 'simple'...he hardly ever makes a quick 'flair' pass, and he must have this in his locker.

He's trying to be the wrong player. He's trying to be a Zidane type player when he should be trying to be a Rijkaard, Matthaus or even Viera. He'll only reach his potential if he's a box to box and for that he'd need to play with far more effort.

I don't have an issue with him playing deeper, but I think if he is to play deeper he needs the right kind of players in midfield with him.
Ross's strength is as a pivot, firing passes to a player and receiving it back to move further up the pitch. If his intention is to sit, he needs to be surrounded by players that will make runs off him to move the play forward, bringing the striker and wingers into play.
McCarthy isn't that player, we very rarely see him make passes that aren't sideways or backwards, and he doesn't burst forward.
If Ross is going to play deeper, would like to see him with Besic, who is more likely to pass and move forward with the ball at feet, and who also has a better passing range. Ross suits a high tempo game where he can buzz around people with quick passing. That's his strength

...I agree that he's been really good this season compared to last. His goal and assist return is where it should be. The only point I would make is that the truly top players influence and decide the big games and the close games in the same way Lukaku did in the quarter final against Chelsea.

If you play Man Utd away the very best have a habit of producing in the same way Alan Ball always did.

Completely agree almost every other pass should be to him he should be the one to make us play. Every game he should be the player in our team who touches the ball the most he needs to be in the thick of it constantly

Ive seen it all now. United fans saying Lingard is better at applying his talent to matches than Barkley... despite Barkley scoring more goals, having more assists and trumping Lingard in just about everything statistical area that matters.

1 comment says that, the one immediately before states that Barkley is comfortably better. I'm not sure there's a great deal to be staggered by there.

Just 1 person saying they'd rather have Lingard as their number 10 ahead of Barkley is staggering.

Plus i love to exaggerate, it's the internet.

I love Barkley and just feel like he can become a scapegoat for some, when he has the ball 25-30 yards out to keep possession he can only go sideways or backwards,no one is making runs in behind. The others are so static that there isn't many options.

Barkley first half and second half are two different players. I've noticed at home all season he is more likely to make a bursting run first half, and tippy tippy pass second half. He drifts out of if game second half, same with England. I don't know if it's tactical or fitness. I just wish they'd give him a position and let him play there, rather than behind striker, then on left wing, then defensive midfield.
