Ross Barkley

Barkley like a lot of players is lacking confidence at present. But equally I think his fitness needs to be better, he just doesn't seem to have the 'legs' to track runners and close people down. As much as his decision making, Ross needs to spend as much time on his fitness. As there is still a top player in there.

Not exactly, but yes.

His job is to move into space and be the focal point of a counter attack. I don't know why this is a surprise.

Again, we play with two holding midfielders solely to accommodate that play. Otherwise, you'd play with a box to box midfielder and an attacking mid, whose job would be then to pick up midfielders and mark.

But we don't. I don't actually understand why people would want Barkley tracking runners aggressively so that he's, first, out of position when we do counter and, second, ensuring we only have one attacking player up front in Lukaku to hit early for a counter.

Who said anything about tracking runners aggressively? Other than you?

It's not about him following an opposition midfielder back into our half to try and win the ball back, then being out of position leaving us short up front, you're right that that would be daft and not how our system works.

But what he could do, and should do is when 2 or 3 opposition players are passing the ball around in their own half, instead of standing in space waiting for them to get into out half incase we win it back and can then play it to him with the opposition still in good shape defensively, he should close them down more whilst still in their own half and not make it so easy for them to get to our half.

You never know, he might seize on a poor touch or pass and we'd be in with a great chance of scoring.

And if he doesn't, once they have gone past him into our half he can then move into space and wait for us to win the ball back.

And also, i'd argue that we play 2 defensive midfielders just as much to cover for 2 attacking full backs as we do for a non defending attacking midfielder.

In possession, yes. Out of it, no, they drop back into shape.

The rest of it, simply disagree. If a player isn't meant to focus on defending, then he's not meant to focus on defending. Whether he attempts the odd standing tackle or whatever is therefore not a measurement I use at all to judge him, and if he doesn't do it then it doesn't make him "fat, lazy, useless" and so on.

Well i never called him "fat lazy or useless" , others made those ridiculous comments, i'm with you on that one.

"Focus" on defending? He doesn't need to focus on defending, he needs to do more than the very little he does now.

Whether its because of the managers instructions or not i'm not interested, i think we would be better as a team if he did more whilst we are not in posession and the other team are passing the ball around to build an attack in their own half. Doing so won't negatively impact on how we play the game, instead it will help us out.

Couldn't agree more. The potential is there, I think he is one of the main players that Martinez has lost! Barkley is definitely a confidence player and it doesn't help when Martinez hauls him off after 70 mins every other game. You only have to look at his reaction to being subbed against the RS on Wednesday to see that

Didn't say you did, just meant previous comments generally.

If he does more, that means he's focussing on it more, which means he's focussing less on playing the role he's being told to do.

Under a new manager, if he's asked to do it, fine, but as it stands I don't believe he's being asked to, so saying he should be held responsible for not doing it is a bit silly in my eyes.

When their midfield is striding into ours (which is sat so deep and miles from him) and he's lost the ball, he should harass and harry them. Not casually jog around. He played football for about 10min today.
That better spell second half was partly due to Cleverly putting himself about

So sick of seeing him give the ball away, keep the ball for too long, make the wrong decisions / pass, it's really awful to see.

Not sure if it's just down to his manager or he is thicker than a whale omlette and self absorbed.

First half, I would have taken him off, absolutely dreadful but improved in the second half.

Lots of people have spoke about Ali v Barkley. For me Ali is a lot more aggressive, and has a lot more desire too. But I think Barkley is not a number 10, more of an 8. I think he's the dembele of the Spurs team. And maybe we need an Ali type player. Watch how often Ali runs past Kane compared to Barkley running past rom.

The interesting think with dembele is at Fulham he looked a good player but inconsistent, and maybe a bit lazy. Went to Spurs and has hardly done anything in 3yrs. Apparently he's now a stone lighter and the fittest he's been in his life. And it shows, he ruining games and still going strong late into games.

I do believe some players are born with real hunger and desire and some aren't. Ross for me needs s new manager who's going to get him fitter. Work on his game and weaknesses. And give him a rollicking from time to time
