Ross Barkley

Got to love the experts who have deemed him 20lbs overweight. 20lbs... That's near enough 10kg. It's going to take a while before this forum settles down isn't it. Look at Rooney ffs, athletes come in all shapes and sizes.

Im not even saying he is overweight.. i am saying he is too big. Too bulky. Needs to drop the weights and do cardio. Maybe he doesnt!? Maybe he just needs to do cardio so he can run around without gasping for air as its pretty essential to be a midfield professional footballer

Name one player on Spurs or Leicester that are given free reign to do one half of the required asking. It's a TEAM game and when EVERYONE contributes to all aspects then that team is top.

I love that he's a blue but there isn't a match where you can sit back and think that he bossed it like any other player on a top team.
There is deffo, look to the first half of the season and you'll find plenty of examples.
It's fine to call him out for being crap which he has been, but there is no need for the melodramatics.

Today I thought illustrated his strengths/weaknesses as a player, he is at his best when he has people moving ahead of him and making runs.
Didn't get into the game until we actually wanted it and people started making runs forward. Then he looked the classy player he can be.

Bossed it on both sides. Let's be fair here. He is absolutely dominating on the attacking part when he is on his game. How many times can you look at his performances and say he bossed it on both sides?

point being, again, it's a team game. EVERY player at both of the top 2 clubs gives their all when they have the ball or when they don't. We have MINIMUM 2 that can't be arsed when they don't have the ball. Which is fine, but we don't have the class that can make up that gap.

He's an attacking midfielder, he's not meant to be running around snapping people.
He needs to do more defensively, but how much does Mata/Silva do on defence? Not a lot.

He's nowhere near that level at this point tho. Silva is probably one of the best AM's in Europe. And even he pretends to move towards people.

I know it's probably reactionary but I'm HUGELY disappointed by how he played today, especially in the first half. BARELY moved when we didn't have the ball and that's being generous.

Barkley frustrates people because he doesnt play like a naismith and we expect our players to run around alot pressing. Fact is Martinez has said before he doesnt want the attackers to do that.

He also needs wingers either side to pass to. We only play with one and if that is Deulofeu then its perfect because hes all out attack, but we need another on thw left side so Barkley can open up the play and vary the attacks -- also leaving space for Lukaku.

The mail today says we will offer him a rise from £60k to at least £80k.

I really do hope that the issue is how Martinez is instructing the lad to play and hopefully will be rectified when the manager goes.

But he really does need to close down opposition players. They move into the next layer of our midfield far far too easily. And like other posters have suggested... the most successful brands of football this year have been talented players with high work rate and determination.

The thing with a player like Barkley is that if he pressed and won the ball high up the pitch he would then be in a great position to drive at a defence that are out of position.

That said, the whole team needs to press and work harder. But it's more than likely a Martinez thing.. the players don't even look fit enough compared to other premier league teams

I remain unconvinced. When he has the ball it is very difficult for anyone to get it off him but he has no idea about when to release it. He wants too many touches of the ball and hence our play slows.

When you see the likes of Rooney and Fellaini moving the ball past him and leaving him behind, you have too question why looks so disinterested in winning the ball back.

If there is a common sight I associate with Barkley from a defensive point of view, it's him jogging harmlessly around 3 yards behind an opposition player strolling through the middle of the park. I'd at least like him to catch up to them and apply pressure, even if tackling is not his game.

He's been managed by Moyes and Martinez since the age of 16 and we wonder why his progression has stalled, He's got the raw ability but he needs coaches around him to give him direction

Harsh truth is our backroom staff and managers are sub standard, I can't see him learning the art of being a world class AM from Steve rounds and Graeme Jones

Name me an attacking minded player that improved under Moyes

Name me any player that has improved under Martinez

We don't want him to press all the time and run round like a dog but sometimes there are times when he just trotting behind a player who attacking and doesn't press which would help the team rather then another player.

Suarez is one of the best player and he doesn't trot around, Rooney is another one who will press. He should build his stamina up so he can press now and again. I do hope it Martinez instructions.

Needs to be able to play 90 minutes at full throttle. If that means more cardio the be should do it Looked far more dangerous when we broke as a unit rather than individually

He would benefit from working under pochettino who has done wonders with alli. Will not get anywhere with our current coaching
