Ross Barkley

One thing I was delighted to see in Ross on Saturday was the anger that sparked within him when Herrera dragged him down, he was up and ready to burst the blert and that pleased me... not that he wanted to potentially get violent, more that he was showed his anger and frustration 'cos I think that rubbed off onto some of the others.
Agree with this. Ross seems to be one of those players who plays his best when riled.

He's 22 now with nearly 3 full years of experience in the prem behind him. He needs to start dominating games, he's not a kid anymore. Fair enough giving him an extra bit of leeway with him being one of our own however at times his will to win and desire is woeful. I can accept him losing the ball when trying to take players on, I can accept misplaced passes but there is no excuse for trotting back and letting opposition players surge by as if he wasn't there.

He's on the ale every other week in town, he looks out of shape and he can't last a full 90 minutes. How often do you seen him going missing for 20 minute spells? Or blowing out of his arse the last 1/4 of games? It's a regular occurrence. He's got all the ability in the world, I'm as desperate as anybody to see him be our hometown hero however that does not mean he is above criticism.

He needs not to be indulged i was dissapointed with him on Sat, he should be dictating the tempo of the game not losing the ball and making a half arsed attempt to get it back, i think he is a bit spoilt under this regime and he badly needs a new coach. Not enough from Ross.

All the talent in the world though.

Is exactly the problem, he's not being coached !!!

Its a waste, i think he is being indulged he obviously not getting a rollicking for loosing poscession and being encouraged to bring it into impossible situations. When we had Utd by the throat at certain times on Sat he should have been dictating the tempo of the game, high intensity, instead he was going into impossible situations, loosing poscession to easily and shirking responsibility to win it back.

Im Ross's biggest fan, but he is being developed in the wrong way, he needs a discplined coach who will teach him all the responsibilites of the central position and not just be a play maker with no respsonabilty, he can make this team tick.

Who's he had to learn from? Rashford's had Rooney to learn from at Man U, Ross has had... Osman?

Eto'? Lots of good pro's to learn from like Barry, Jags etc and has had countless sessions with England too.

I wish everyone would stop making excuses for him tbh. Hopefully the new manager will get a bit more out if him, give him the confidence, drive and determination he seems to lack.

His skills are inherent. He doesn't need any sort mentor. What he needs is proper direction & to understand his purpose. Martinez has been far too laissez-faire and it's ruining the lad.

Id also make the point about the penalty as well apart from Baines, Ross clearly has a shot and placement of a set peice, he has a vicious shot. He should be considered as our penalty taker - but the fact he isnt even in the mix shows me he again is being indulge din a lack of responisbility, its not fair on the lad or his development. If your going to build a team around a player you have to give him responsability.

On a broader point how ridiculous has our penalty taking been in the last couple of seasons, not like it was in area that needed fixing, we've made a right pigs ear of it.

He needs a kick up the backside and clear responsibility for his own good and talent.

I think there is clearly a culture of indulgance around certain players at the club, Stones and Lukaku as well - im not critising those players, but its been allowed happen to them - they have been given a free regin to do whatever they feel their talent will dictate, without core responsibilites, to the team or result. Its not fair on their development and they are being kept from the players they should be developing into.

On a different note, how good was Stones when he moved into midfield on Sat, i thought he was brilliant. When you look at what Dier has done at Spurs, it makes you think.

Certainly does!

Absolutely. Remember, martinez in his first season was obsessed - completely obsessed - with getting players to the world cup. Forget a team ethos, martinez has based the side around individualism and playing to individual strengths. A 'make them look good' attitude.

I think there is a bit of politics that is being played. Managers given the nature of the job and likely short timelines are always reviewing their own CV's Martinez has a vested interest in Stones, Lukaku and Barkley as at his next interview he can say he was the man that developed Lukaku, Barkley and Stones and by association make any club 100mills in the transfer market if need be - this has led him to indulge all three - that is not a criticism of the players, but rather a reason why all three are indulged to a certain extent and has hindered there development.

If we played to his strengths - IE as a playmaker who took the ball from deep lying midfielders instead of giving him high balls to his chest to try and control and play out wide we would see some mileage.
