Ross Barkley

There's quite a few posts on the forum about Ronald should be giving the younger players a chance in the team, given the treatment Ross gets and the almost toxic atmosphere at the moment, perhaps throwing a young kid to the lions is not a good solution.

He has so many chances but it does not work for him lately.

The problem with Ross is that when he's having a bad game in terms of his touch, passing etc, its basically like being down to 10 men. If he was struggling but still putting tackles in, harrying, pressing and tracking back then he could be forgiven as players will always have off days, however Ross only offers something in an attacking sense, so if that's not working then we are stuck.

Arsenal have a similar situation with Ozil, when he's off form its like being a man down as he does 0 dirty work. He will lose the ball and expect everyone else to win it back, however Ozil has a lot less off days than Ross.

It not just him, there are a few like him out there, however he needs to take responsibility for the work he's putting in on the field.
Comparing Barkley with Ozil! Really funny. Whats next! Comparing Lukaku with Messi? LOL

If you read it again you will see that im not comparing their quality, im comparing their workrate.

Ozil is the only other player in the prem who is as inneffective as Ross when he's off form, thats why I said him - he's honestly one of the laziest players around but the fact that he produces moments of pure quality more often than not, means the laziness is quite often overlooked.

Ross however doesnt have this to fall back on so has to put more in.

I am a massive Ross Barkley fan, but even I can't ignore that he's becoming a huge problem in this side.

He is playing in probably the hardest position on the pitch. He is expected to press the opposition and stop them playing out, whilst being the fulcrum of the team and creating chances. At the moment he just isn't doing either.

He either needs a run of games in a different position or be taken out the team completely. Still think he will come good, just not in this no.10 position.

I don't see where the criticism is coming from. The entire team is playing abjectly, to get the best out of Barkley you need to have people running off him - allowing a yard or two of space for him to run into.

Lukaku isn't helping.

I always thought Ross best position is further back but tbh I'm of the opinion now he just can't do it. There's not a sliver of snide in the lad. Does not like putting the foot in and you need that about you to play in a two CM. I'm not saying he has to run around snapping people but he has to win his fair share of 50/50's and he doesn't. Like Scholes was as cultured as they came but was filth if he had to be and I don't think Ross will ever have that. Has some fantastic ability though.

He's never had a run of games there. One of his best performances for us was QPR at home the other year. Not the best opposition, but he ran the show from central midfield.

Has to be worth a try because in the number 10 position he is effecting our ability to press the other team, and our ability to break teams down.

Slightly baffled as to how he's being singled out again following that shambles. It could have been anyone playing there & they'd have looked no better. The problem isn't solely Barkley, the whole midfield is devoid of ideas, including both wingers, regardless of which 2 he picks.

Mental.

This is the Barkley thread mate. Go look at the Baines thread, the Jags thread, the Coleman thread etc if you want to see other players getting ripped.

I would've agreed until recently, I always thought was his best position but imo you need to be able to tackle to play there, or like Scholes, have that bit of snide about you. He'd be fine against the likes of QPR and poorer midfielders but against good teams where you have to get physical and get stuck in he'll be found wanting and be somewhat of a liability. In saying that though I'd be more than willing to try him there for 3-4 games to see how it goes cause it is not working at the minute.

There isn't a player in the world who can press over the distances we are asking him to cover the shape of the team is completely wrong defence is 15 yards to deep.

That's a good point.

It was painfully obvious in the Chelsea game wasn't it? Jagielka, Williams, Barry all terrified of getting beaten for pace and just dropping further and further back.
