You would be surprised mate. I had a few tasty conversations with our Irish brethren over McCarthy after he got injured again prior to the last derby. I think on the whole, the Irish would possibly put country before club. Not everyone but, from the conversations on here, I would suggest the majority. I'm not saying that's wrong by the way, everybody is entitled to their choice. Just saying the concept is nowhere near as bizarre as you may think.:)
In the main yes
Most Irish players would put country over club
One or two notable exceptions of course. Roy Keane etc
But it's a long story and a lot of history and politics why this is so.
I've always found it hard to accept the apparent apathy towards the English national team from fervent football supporters

Just as 'jumping the shark' became an idiom for 'it's now gotten ridiculous and past it's use by date', the expression 'goosing a gangster's moll' will be idiom for a total balls up of a misstep, with dire consequence.

eg "well, that was a terrible decision by Coca Cola to change their branding"
"yes, it was, they've really goosed a gangster's moll"

I might recommend abbreviating it to 'goosed a gangster's'. I like the alliterative terseness of this.

Eg " that was a terrible decision to do that back heel Mo"
" yes, I goosed a gangster's there"
You could be on to something here
I know in one posters eyes RK would spend his life goosing gangsters

"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel"

Hanging around like a bad smell. Whittled down his contract in silence. Disappointing.

Yeah, but at the same time just imagine how he must be feeling, all the talking of being a professional footballer aside. He's a local lad and the pressure on him to perform in the last years has been far more than on anyone else. And he seems to be a target for local lads trying to play the big man in the club or in the streets who'll go and pick a fight with him. And then there's that Sun [Poor language removed], the bloody POS... I believe anyone of us would be yearning for a change of environment as well...

Welcome to the forum mate

Talking to my mate in Liverpool a couple of hours ago about tickets for the EL and my 6 PL games
He and his dad are season ticket holders but his day is touching 80 and only goes to 6/7 games a year.
Anyhow the ROSS situation came up and he reckons the ROSS situation and McCarthy have messed up our transfer plans.
We all expected ROSS to go for approx 35 m maybe more and McCarthy for 20/25 m
That could have been 60 m to spend on a striker and a CB/LB
By ROSS and McCarthy not going early as we expected that's blown a hole in the clubs transfer kitty.
If Spurs had really wanted ROSS they would have bid a decent fee early in the window , because let's be honest the dogs in the street know he was tapped up.
I wonder how ROSS feels knowing Spurs only rate him enough to take him as a bargain bucket buy to sit on the bench inbetween Jansen and Sissoko

A bid might finally get made next week then.
It is hard to know where Spurs stand regarding Barkley. Spurs have been quiet in the market and so far I think they have signed a defender and a defensive midfielder.
They have also sold a couple of players including Kyle Walker.

It is so clear they are waiting until the last day to push the price as low as possible, but what is not clear is if Everton will be prepared to sell at a knockdown price.
Twelve months ago Everton effectively forced Spurs to overpay Newcastle by about 15m for Sissoko by trying to buy the player ourselves.

This year I feel that Arsenal and certainly Chelsea may have something to say about this transfer and maybe other clubs as well. This may go to the wire and I think Ross and his agent may be sweating a bit at present.

I just don't think RK wants to sell McCarthy.

Maybe that's the delay with the striker
The ROSS money if any will help us upgrade on the striker we go for.
Big difference in the quality you can attract with 25 m and 60 m if we get 35 for ROSS
Maybe that's why the Costa loan is getting such airtime till we know how much we have to spend

Maybe yes maybe no
But he must be getting frustrated with a player who's never fit
If he got a decent offer I'd say he'd let him go especially if it meant he could upgrade the striker we go for.
I think if he does after already losing Barry that he would need to sign another midfielder and I think they probably have enough new faces already with probably two more to come.

One thing that's for certain, is that neither Arsenal or Chelsea have so much as cast a glance his way. Nor have United, or City, or anyone else he's been arbitrarily linked with in the papers. The only club I can see as possibly being interested is Spurs. Seeing as they haven't even made a tentative enquiry or an opening bid, I think even that's doubtful.

My prediction is he's still here after September 1st, and the narrative will move on to "the top clubs are all waiting til January to get the price down even more".

Any club signing him will have to pay a half decent wedge and 3 months wages to an injured player, if you wait until the end of the season you get a fit, good player free. If he is truly only intrested in Spurs then this is the more likely outcome. If Chelsea, Arsenal or City bid this window Spurs will have to match it and we at least get some cash. He may fall back in love with the club and sign a new deal. Some drama to follow with any scenario, who knows a big Euro club may be after a decent profit come Jan???

Talking about fans mate. Not players.
