2017/18 Ross Barkley

I don't get why the lad is taking so much hate when it's Everton that wouldn't open negotiations with us... I'm pretty baffled by the situation tbh. We would have gone to £30m.

I'm still pretty sure that Chelsea persuaded Everton not to negotiate with us to get back at us for our Aurier deal.
Do you know your chairman, mate?

Levy trying to do us over.

We'll soon see how your fans will react if/when Delle Ali or Kane try to do you lot over to get their move to United.

And how would they do that? Ask nicely?
For money more than likely. French newspapers were running stories that Chelsea went to PSG to bid on Aurier after they found out he had got a work permit only to find that Levy had negotiated an exclusivity clause with PSG so they wouldn't allow Chelsea to bid.

I can't see any reason not to negotiate with us and lose money unless Chelsea did the same with Barkley. And tbh Moshiri/Usmanov and Abramovich know each other well.

Chelsea then knew they had a clean run at Barkley only to find that he changed his mind.

Doesn't make sense - if Chelsea offer us £35m, there's no reason whatsoever for us not to listen to other offers of the same fee.

We probably refused to negotiate with you because we suspect that you've tapped him up in advance. The far more likely answer.

If Chelsea said it was only £35m with exclusivity to them it seems completely logical to me. It was well reported we were only going to go up to £30m and Everton must have thought Barkley would have no worries signing for Chelsea. It was a winwin.

Sorry but that makes zero sense. I think you're blinded by not being able to contemplate the possibility you've tapped a player up, when it's the far more logical reason.

Barkley is effectively an asset - saying "we'll give you £35m if you accept no other interest from anyone else" opens the door to having to refuse a £40m bid from anyone else. No club would do that.

Or we see Spurs as a more likely target to overtake in the short-mid term.

We haven't had the best of relationships with Chelsea regarding transfers for a few years (the Stones saga was particularly vitriolic) so don't think we'd be doing them any favours tbh if Spurs were prepared to come even close to the requested amount.

Everybody knew it was only us and Chelsea in on deadline day. It was effectively accepting an extra £5m for nothing. I think maybe you are blinded wanting to see the worst in Barkley.

A lot of my story makes sense, it's pretty clear we were in several battles with Chelsea on deadline day, for Barkley, Aurier and Llorent.

If the player was a Tottenham product and the same situation arose I would in all likelihood feel the same way as the majority of the posters here.

The difficulty being that no one knows exactly what was said, done or promised either so as an outsider it is very difficult to make an informed judgement.

Obviously the closest parallel is with Judas although this, as yet, is not in that league. Judas maintained for at least 18 months that he was going to sign a new contract before leaving on a Bosman. We had interest from Man U at £20m which in 2000 was a huge transfer fee but he kept fobbing us off until he left for nothing to be the highest paid payer in the country (and possibly Europe) at our deadliest rivals.

If Barkley keeps back tracking until next summer window and than joins the RS then he will be in the same league as Judas.

I can full understand and empathise why he has turned the Everton faithful against him though.

Well if that's the case, you're a bit of a dope.

He has clearly agreed to join your club, he was in London with his agent waiting for your bid, we knew he'd been tapped up and therefore refused to deal with you. He's a grade A bell. But do not worry, I guarantee that he'll end up with you at Spurs.

No chance that Barkley tracks back.

Possibly, but doubt it due to the situation with Barkley. He's had a plan in mind for a long time now, and that indicates tapping up has occurred or he's always intended to run his contract down for the signing on fee.
Maybe it's just that he's good mates with Alli and Dier so would prefer Spurs for that only. Assuming tapping up is harsh imo.

Yes, because my track record on Barkley suggests that's the case here hahaha
