2017/18 Ross Barkley

Why would Ross go along with something underhanded? He has all the power in his hands.

He didn't want to go to Chelsea because he felt the choice was being dictated to him due to Everton refusing to enter negotiations with us.

This is all guesswork, but the question is why has he gone to Chelsea? Why not just rule it out completely like say Oxlade Chamberlain. I imagine Chelsea have said something to him informally when he came, that he'd be second choice or behind Drinkwater. Or perhaps Spurs have told him they'd still be in for him in January to hold tight.

What do Spurs lads make of all this mate? Are you keen on him?

Well the reports from the Telegraph/Guardian were that we were willing to go upto £30m.

Interesting. Your main man is one of the most astute men in football, and very numerate on value. I suggest you will get him for half that in January. I find it hard to believe he'd pay 15 million pounds, plus his wages, for 1 months football? Do you reckon you will match our offer on wages?

I'd like him, he comes across as a decent lad to me. It's unfortunate that he's fell out with Koeman and wants to leave Everton as a result.

I just think to assume we tapped him up and told him to wait to January just to save money you have to assume the worst of Ross Barkley. He's the one with the entire picture of the situation... why would he say no to Chelsea if we were the club being underhanded to screw his boyhood club out of money?

Personally I believe the reports that say Everton refused to listen to any of our offers and that's why Ross said no.

I don't get why the lad is taking so much hate when it's Everton that wouldn't open negotiations with us... I'm pretty baffled by the situation tbh. We would have gone to £30m.

I'm still pretty sure that Chelsea persuaded Everton not to negotiate with us to get back at us for our Aurier deal.
How do we know this?

There wasn't a bid... the reports that came out were that Everton wouldn't let us bid. Did you read my posts?
I seriously doubt if a club can prevent another club from making an offer.

Whether that offer is accepted is another matter.

There was no offer.

When Barkley walks away for next to nothing in Jan or for absolutely nothing, it will all become clear.

But you most likely didn't start at that figure.

If it is the last week of the window and we have a solid offer of 35m from Chelsea and a "perhaps" offer of uo to 30m from Spurs then understandable the club would say "sorry Spurs but we're going to go with the Chelsea offer and no, you can't talk to Ross".

Why? There is no reason too. If you bid what Chelsea bid then he would have been given permission to talk to you.

You know more than anyone what Levy is like. Why pay £30 - £35 mill now, plus wages for another 3-4 months when he cant play. He probably assumes or has been told that Ross fancies a move to you, so why not wait until Jan, save £15 - £20 mill on the fee and another couple of million in wages.

I just don't see how the logical conclusion is that Ross agreed to wait it out until January just to save Tottenham a few bucks and screw over his boyhood club. I don't see what he gains from that or how that is any way a reasonable conclusion.

If I'm Ross in that situation and I see Chelsea want me so bad they are willing to pay £35m now but Spurs are messing about just to save a few quid I'm telling them to do one and joining the club that clearly wants me more.

It's obvious there is more to it.

Everton don't want to negotiate with you because you've tapped him up and encouraged the agent.

He is going ahead with something underhanded. Ie let us pay his wages for the season while he's crocked so spurs get him on a free and we're out 35m of a fee and 3 or 4m in wages. Underhand indeed

He has his heart set on Spurs, Spurs are not the type of club that will pay £35m for a injured player in August when they can get him for £15m in January saving them £20m. What's so hard to understand?

And he clearly didn't go ahead with it. He pulled the plug on the Chelsea move. Because he wants spurs. It's blatantly obvious. He was probably put under pressure to join Chelsea so just headed south to get away from the club events though he'd no intention of signing. A real snake.
We must be tapping up with magic spells or something for him to refuse to join a club that did better than us last season, wins more trophies and pays higher wages. Or perhaps there's more to it.

My take on Ross Barkley, however unpopular this will e, is that the club need to do their upmost to get him to sign a deal.

Whatever Koeman or Moshiri think on the issue (which I believe will be quite strong feelings after this episode) in all likelihood matters little, nor in truth do what fans think. What is central here is we have a 35 million pound asset that can leave for nothing in 12 months. In business, you are often expected to do things you would detest, deal with people you envy, hate or antagonise for the greater good. This is another such moment.

Ideally it would be a deal with no clauses. If not a deal with a clause at 30 million + with perhaps the carrot of a decent signing on fee would be possible, with the proviso he could leave in January or the summer.

It looks very unlikely currently. There have been one or two olive branches from Barkley though. 4 months is a long time in football. Spurs may struggle. Spurs may go off the player a little. Maybe Rooney can get into Barkley's head? 4 Months time elapsed from Schneiderlin not being for sale to being for sale. A lot can change in that time. We need to be working with Ross to get him to sign a deal.
