2017/18 Ross Barkley

Lets put it anotger way, who sits on the bench so Barkley can play?

Considering we signed a tonne of number 10s to replace him, I don't think any have done the job. Rooney is moving deeper, Klaassen is last pick in training kick abouts and Sigurdsson had come good recently but in my view isn't performing like Barkley was (yet).

A bit of competition between Sigurdsson and Ross would be good for both of them.

Also, Ross can do a job in a deeper role.

Time will tell if he's good enough for a place in the starting 11 of Spurs or Chelsea (in their current squads). In my opinion he's worth a place in ours (when fully fit and playing well).
I see him being on the bench at best in either of the above mentioned teams. In my view they see him as a good 'addition' to their squad and at a bargain price. No brainer really. We'd be made up if we signed someone like him for £10m to £15m.
Its how this has played out from Ross and most likely his agent thats disappointing for me. Add in the fact that he's a 'Blue' and been brought through our Academy (& nursed back from 2 major injuries on full pay) and it starts to get a bit sickening.

....Sigurdsson will never ‘perform like Barkley’ because they are different types. Sigurdsson naturally plays in and around the CF and is a fine finisher. Barkley is more of a runner with the football, he can pick the ball up from deep more effectively than Sigurdsson but is not as effective in the top third. A better comparison is Barkley and Vlasic.

I agree they are different players, as are Rooney and Klassen, but the question was who would get benched for Barkley. I see all of these players as relatively central midfielders of varying positions on the pitch (Sigurdsson likes to be wide, but he's not a winger) and I guess it depends on what system we choose to adopt as to who will be most effective.

Can you play Sigurdsson, Rooney and Barkley in the same team?

..I doubt Sigurdsson ‘likes’ to play wide, I reckon he’d love to play centrally. I doubt he’d get benched for Barkley. I can’t really see Barkley figuring much, although he would enable us to get up the pitch better than we are doing now. I reckon Vlasic could be very effective doing what Barkley does and I reckon Vlasic could score more goals.

You`re allowed to call him a snake, you know ;)

I like Vlasic but feel like there is quite a lot of revisionism going on about how talented and effective Barkley can be on his day, due the the fact that he's treated the club poorly.

Anyway, if he wants to go, let him go. If he wants to stay, I think he could play a big role in the squad myself.

Barkley walks into this team if he stays, it's as simple as that.

People go on about all the young players we have at the club, Barkley has more talent than all of them.

I really think if we have to keep Sigurdsson and Rooney, we should try and retrain or try Ross as a wide player or attacking player, the way many strikers are used wide in 4-2-3-1 systems. We need a winger, he's two footed, we need a striker, he's quick and pacy, I think we should consider the fact that the no.10 role is a fashion and slightly overrated and in our team we don't suit a playmaker, but 2-3 ball playing attackers and Ross would certainly fit the bill ...

e.g. say you had 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1

either way you'd have a 'front 4'

so you have
Bolasie - Gylfi - Ross - Striker (DCL, Niasse, someone new)

Vlasic and Lookman are the reserves for any of these front 4

Rooney plays deep with Gana or Schneiderlin

Im just thinking aloud seeing how we could keep Ross and Rooney and Gylfi

Ross can also remember that Rooney has about 2 years max, at which point he'll only be 26 and with many years of being the central player
