The game has vastly changed in the last 20-30 years.

I was in the process of moving to Newport and staying in a local hotel where Wayne Shelfords AllBlacks were also staying during their tour.

The difference in quality and size was clear as they pasted Newport when they played them. One of their props could only get into the hotel lift if he went in sideways lol

Llanelli 9 3 NZ.

Cant even envisage a NZ touring team playing clubs these days, let alone losing to them.

And one of Max Boyce's memorable lines.

"We all missed work the next day, and we all felt the same. We all had Scarlet Fever, and we caught it at the game"

I will never tire of watching Stuart Hogg trudging off the pitch with his hands on his hips and his face pointed at the floor. Talented player, but far too petulant.

Massive win for Ireland, weathering a storm of injuries in a hostile stadium against a highly-touted Scottish team. Andrew Porter, James Ryan and Josh Van Der Flier put in HUGE shifts, smashing the Scottish pack to pieces in the second half.
The game would be far more entertaining if there were more like him. Full back has been a major attacking position in League for a while now but it's taken a while for Union to move on from the Mike Brown types who can catch a bomb and not much else. England in particular has really been left behind, and Borthwick is another 10-man rugby stick it up the jumper type.

Never questioned his talent, Bruce. However his churlish mentality holds him back. Very selfish player, with a litany of dropping easy finishes and butchering overlaps out of greed.

Hogg's interview a couple years back, where he got snarky with the reporters because they had the cheek to ask him about things that had gone wrong in the previous game, was illuminating. Plus the rumours in the game are that as a teammate he's a terrifically difficult individual.

He will always be regarded as "so near yet so far" by objective fans.

As for Borthwick... Terrible appointment by the RFU. Wrong man at the wrong time. I'd imagine the RFU will be keeping tabs on Andy Farrell and Shaun Edwards already, and one (or both of them) will be quietly approached shortly after the 6N in 2024.

EDIT: apparently tango whisky alpha tango is now contrary to the swear filter?

It's mad that as big as these fellas look on TV, it REALLY doesn't compare to how big they are in real life.

I bumped into ex-Springboks captain Francois Pienaar in London once, back in 2015 - we were in the same shop at the same time. I'm 6'1" and weigh 200lbs. I'm not fat but I'm not a gym bunny either... This was 20 years after he won the RWC with South Africa and he dwarfed me.

About five years before that I was in the WH Smiths in Gatwick South terminal and ex-Ireland lock Donncha O'Callaghan was in the queue in front of me at the till. He's absolutely massive, had to duck on his way out!
