Running

Yeah I’ve just been taking it easy over the fields to keep ticking over - it’s hard doing any kind of intervals cos the paces aren’t comparable and I’m too weak minded to use perceived effort

I’m about 2 mins down per mile, but consoling myself with the effort brought on by plodding trough ankle deep snow, is making up for the lack of speed 😂

I was out for a 14 miler in the ice last Thursday ,then a long run where I ran around the mean but ice free streets of a local village , Monday was a slow plod in the snow . Yesterday was a white out so I jogged down to the local council -owned gym and ran on the treadmill for 8 miles including 8 x 4 minutes bursts and a slow plod home. The tredder worked out well , not my first choice but it’s allowed me to get the mileage in as part of my marathon training.

How much food should you eat during marathon training? If you’re doing 30 to 50 miles a week plus a couple of gym workouts do you need to be smashing the food in?
Eat when you're hungry. I've only ever known elite runners to watch their diet, but you'll be self regulating. It's hard to eat fried chicken every day running that much because you feel terrible, but there's no healthy reason to hold back on calories.

Yes ! Hydration too as well as food is very important. If you don’t eat/ drink well your training tiredness will quickly catch up with you and you’ll plateau instead of improving or worse have little energy for your long runs. As soon as I finish a run I take a recovery drink , it helps replenish and rehydrate. I use Tailwind , other brands available . I also take “ energy gels” on my long runs and for the marathon itself . My problem is I can’t take more than two when you really need many more . Marathon Nutrition is a whole science in itself there is so much info on it for your training, what to eat in the days before and morning of the race and how many carbs etc you need during the race.
If you’ve got more specific questions pop them in here, somebody will answer .

Most people don't need many carbs to finish a marathon*, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't eat. Probably 2 gels is enough for a marathon, just train that way and you'll run that way.

*CBA but there's some good math on stored glycogen and fuel burn per hour running; TLDR, if you're training correctly your metabolism shifts to fat burning, although most people running 50+ mph don't have a lot of fat to burn... but either way you don't likely need to eat a short stack of pancakes during a run to finish anything under 4 hours.

Need to start... still have an unfulfilled ambition to the London Marathon one day.

Trouble is I'm 50 in March...

I did my first marathon at 53 and my first ultra at 54 mate.

@blueloon is in his 70`s and still runs marathons ;)

If you can find the time to train, you can finish a marathon.

Remember, there`s a big difference in the training if " you just want to finish " over wanting to be competitive.

A lot of training for first timers who " just want to finish " involves running and walking combined ;)

No age at all , you just have to train for it. I did a few marathons in my younger days.

There are plenty of guys your age and older doing marathons

Most trail races I do are packed full of fifty something runners, as they`re the ones with the free time to train, the kids have left home / retired and have the disposable income to have a nice weekend away based around their running or the race that they`re running in.

Anyone else been running in all of this snow and ice ?

It`s tough going.

Yesterday was ankle deep slush, today it was like trying to run an ice rink

Needless to say all of the runs this week, have been more of a jog, walk and try to stay on your feet !!!!
Deliberately avoided running in that. I had a week back after Christmas so I'm not 3 weeks off it thankfully but when the thaw hits properly from Monday I'll have a bit of catching up to do. Thankfully the only thing I'm running towards is a 50yo beach bod for the summer

I'd love to return to running again but have to admit that my Achilles is wrecked with a combination of marathons and table tennis.

Can just about manage 3 miles now before it starts to ache and I become petrified that it's going to tear again so to be honest I try to avoid it when doing cardio

This. I stopped being competitive at marathons several years ago. I completed a marathon in October last year just to try pace the missus to a pb. Id done no long distance training, but knew I'd get round at my wife's pace.

That said apparently Paula Radcliffe is coming out of retirement, so might I 😆. My first marathon was the same one where she set the women's world record .

Just had my first race of the year on Sunday cancelled ( Montane Delamere Half ) due to safety issues regarding car parks and the ice.

The course is apparently runnable, but the car parks are like ice rinks :(
Tell em last night's game was on, and that had 38k+ attending 😆

You could always go along and run the course anyways??
