It's a bit loony to think about, but if Coleman had never gone down, we would have probably never fired Koeman and finished 7th again this year. Everton capitulated the second he went down, and you can tell how big he was for Koeman's Everton. His positional instinct was so good.

Possibly finished sixth given how Arsenal have tanked.

I think you can combine that with Baines going down. It cannot be overstated how bad it hurt us using a RB at LB with zero left foot. It hurt us so bad. Teams targeted that side and the ball just went backwards when we attacked from that side.

I just remember Coleman would always find himself in great scoring positions at RB. It's like he had more attacking instinct than all of our players combined. He was everywhere... it's probably the most impact he had under any manager. Not a fan of Koeman, but Coleman was massive last year.

Gone through past seasons results against the top 6 mate going back to 2010/11 season. Here's the figures.

11/12 W5 D4 L3 Points 19
12/13 W3 D1 L8 Points 10
12/13 W2 D6 L4 Points 12
13/14 W4 D3 L5 Points 15
14/15 W1 D3 L8 Points 7
15/16 W1 D5 L6 Points 8
16/17 W2 D4 L6 Points 10
17/18 W0 D4 L8 Points 4

So yeah, apart from back in the Moyes knife to a gunfight days we've never come out on top against the top 6, and it's debatable how "top 6" Man City actually were in those days. But realistically, isn't that to be expected to a degree. We could never compete with the big boys on transfer fees and salaries.

But I have to say it has been worse this year than normal. It's the first season we haven't won a single game and, in fairness, haven't remotely looked likely to. We have basically been given a footballing lesson by the big teams this season evidenced by the for and against stat of 6 v 30.

I now you're not one for stats mate but these ones don't mask the truth.

And this isn't a go at Sam per se. Koeman was in charge for 5 of those games. It's just highlighting the fact that it has been a bit worse than usual this season.

12/13 looks like a very heavy season.... This is why I don't do stats! lol

Worth mentioning that the "big six" have only been the big six for what, two seasons? and it used to be the Big Four. I am assuming a lot of those points gained were against teams in fifth and sixth (and wouldn't we have been one of those teams in some of those seasons?) So have those season dropped down to top 7 instead?

All I know is our record and performances against the top sides of whatever year are generally poor. Its certainly nothing new. Its not even the results for me (though obviously a part of it) but how we roll over and die. The Arsenal games this season for example were shocking but I can still think of 3-4 performances against them that were even worse than this seasons showing. (0-7, The "Lescott Game" etc).

Big changes in mentality are needed at the club which is anther reason why I don't want Allardyce as he will offer more of the same, but it does also show that its not a new thing and we have been this way for many many years.

The biggest thing with Sam is that he plays such a negative style of ball that top quality players aren't going to want to come here to play that. That just makes us still in that best of the rest crowd instead of pushing that top 6 group. Didn't want Allardyce from the very start because I know he can't attract top talent. For all of Koeman's faults he still attracted players with his Barca roots and Sam can't touch that.

Just out of interest which players did Koeman attract here? I cant think of anyone who would not have came here without him in charge.

I would need to dig out the quotes but I recall many of the signings stating that one of the biggest reasons they came was because of the manager. Sandro is definitely one (hindsight is 20/20 but all of us were super pumped about him), quite sure Koeman played a big part in Keane wanting to make the move as well as Gylfi pushing as hard as he did. The Koeman appointment showed ambition and a desire to challenge. While I think he was a victim of the board, injuries and his lack of getting the club he is definitely more attractive in world football than allardyce.

RS winning the CL and Big Sam with a contract extension, that's why we can't have anything nice lads!

If that happens I will say a tearful goodbye to this world.

This is actually true. The longer he stays the more our club will an image of him.

I saw a James MCLean interview at the weekend. I dont like the fella at all but what he said was interesting. He was what the difference has been since the new manager has come in. He replied getting back to basics. No respect to Alan (Pardew) but he tried to get us to play a more expansive game, but we were so set in our ways the players could not adapt.

Maybe there lies the explanation as to why teams he’s managed struggle when he leaves them. Rather than him being an expert firefighter who has them punching above their weight. Same for Pulis whose 2 former clubs look like they’re on their way down.

Totally agree with this, plus Sam likes to get his merry band of overpaid old cloggers signed up, wring the very last drops of life out of them, and then buggers off to leave the mess for someone else

He’s believes Ballague he’s also a Allardyce lover
He does wind me up at times, Prentice
Whenever a manager is struggling he always refers to Kendall in 82/83. And always talks about how great baines & Jags are abd we shouldn’t have sold Barry. Won’t say a bad word about anybody.

Didn’t he write a piece once about Hodgson not being good enough for Liverpool?

Keane and Sigurdsson were at much smaller clubs, they probably would have came here regardless (also we were the only ones daft enough to pay what the clubs wanted for them). No doubt they thought it would be nice to work with a legendary player like Koeman but I doubt it was a major factor unless other clubs of a similar status to us were interested.

Yeah. First should have been 10/11 and he second 11/12. Got it right in the summary at least:)

Agree with the rest of your post by the way.

There have been times though, mainly under Martinez to be fair, when we really took the game to them an thoroughly deserved what we got from the game or more. Can't say that about the last couple of seasons other than City last year.

Which is another reason why Allardyce needs to go.
