Sam Allardyce says the size and make-up of Everton’s squad has given him the biggest challenge of his managerial career.

The Blues boss believes former boss Ronald Koeman had a “difficult job” in making a revamped group of players gel whilst also juggling an early start to the season.

Everton added eight new players to their ranks in the summer as part of a £150m record spend but also lost top scorer Romelu Lukaku and influential midfielder Gareth Barry.

The Blues’ campaign started in July with a Europa League third qualifying round tie with Ruzomberok and with a number of players struggling to settle at Goodison, the team suffered.

Allardyce is hoping to add a striker and left-sided defender to his squad this month but believes his biggest task is bringing the existing players closer together.

Asked about why Sandro Ramirez has not settled in England, Big Sam replied: “There’s never a guarantee when a top player comes from abroad that he will settle in his first year.

“And certainly not settle when the team isn’t doing very well anyway.

“So every new player that came from abroad would find it difficult to perform to his best level he possibly could when the team struggles in the first place.

“Struggles from having to start in July and having to all integrate together is one of the most difficult jobs as a manager to pull the new players in together with the old players.

“You may have caused a character problem with some of them – you can always have a clash of characters – which you have to be aware of and effectively you have got to manage all that, manage all those different cultures, different religions, different attitudes to playing and training and you’ve got to find a way round all that to bring that squad all together.

“And with the size of this squad that’s a bigger challenge than I’ve had before but one we must strive to do always.”

Our squad was big so that that we could compete in the Europa League... it is now way to big for a harmonious squad. If players are playing, or have no chance of playing they lose intensity, it creates divisions and murmuring of dissatisfaction within the squad. I firmly believing cutting the dead wood, would have a benefitial effect to our first 11 performance.

You can be proud of our HISTORY but it doesn't make us relevant in the present day.
No I understand what you mean, and you're right, I just mean I wouldn't call it entitlement when people bristle at our own manager reminding us that we're not what we were or want to be. There are points that need making and things that can go unsaid, this is one of the latter in my opinion.

Oh yeh I agree it doesn't need saying but I definitely have an issue with people flaming him for referring to those clubs as big boys. It's just obvious by now. Going on 23 years since a trophy doesn't make us big.

It is obvious, but as I said, does our manager need to be saying it in public? I don't know if you're locally based but if you are you can surely understand that many fans will be feeling a little betrayed that on the eve of a derby our own manager has declared that we're not as big a club as our lovable neighbours? We all know it's true, but it would really be better left unsaid.

I'm Cumbrian so maybe that's it. I personally don't care, I like a little realism in my manager's, but obviously wasn't a necessary comment. Was he including the reds in the Big Boys comment though?

After saying all the squad needed was coaching he now declares he needs money and new signings, not to mention the disrespectful "big boys" comment, the Alardisation of the fanbase continues. I cannot believe that fans fall for this crap and try and justify his appointment or worse support it. Get rid.

...he does say some insightful comments in his press conferences.

Today he said he had to rotate the squad over this busy period and indicated we weren’t as solid at the back as we had been. I thought it interesting when he said we had to keep a clean sheet to win games, suggesting we can’t be relied upon to score more than one goal.

We were not 18th when he took over. We were not 18th when he was offered the job. Seriously, if you're going to call people out over 'wilful ignorance' then I find it's best to make sure you're not the ignorant one. We were 16th after the Southampton game, not 18th, and therefore not in the relegation zone. We were 18th when Unsworth took over, which shows that the improvement in league position had already started before he came in, even if you choose to push your agenda by ignoring the fact West Ham was clearly on Unsworth's watch and we were, to all intents and purposes, 13th when Allardyce took charge.
Calm down brother it's easy to make a mistake nobody is being ignorant...
