My nephew met Big Sam in the Park End car park before the match and he said he came across as the most genuine and down-to-earth fella you could wish to meet. He said he was posing for autographs and photographs for a good half an hour.

He also spoke about the great Everton teams of the past and of his close friendship with Reidy.

Top bloke.

The problem is that I can't see Davies and Rooney doing any better trying to track those players. The biggest positive for me is actually our manager who is at least capable of working on something to stop them.

Could you imagine if Martinez was leading us into this game...
I was at probably the worst goodison derby in history when Martinez played 3 CDM and essentially shut up shop.

He was pretty pragmatic that day.

I have a funny feeling Big Sam will do very well here.

Rooney looks like he has had a new lease of life but that could also be down to the break and getting over him marriage problems

I think Sam sees the Everton gig as a final opportunity to leave his mark on the game, and get the plaudits that he may well think he doesn't get. He'll also know that he has a much better chance of success here, than arguably at any of his previous clubs.

He may have been playing it cool, but truth be told I reckon he couldn't believe that this job came up and he managed to snare it. After all, given his famed self-belief and confidence in his own ability, it seemed at odds that he'd accept this job even when it was clear he wasn't our first choice. I thought maybe his pride would have been dented that we weren't chasing him from the outset, and he would have told us to 'eff off when we went back to him after we couldn't get our first and second targets.

So in short, yeah I reckon he'll do well. His career was almost in pieces after the England fiasco, so he will be incredibly desperate to leave football with reputation and legacy intact.

Haven't had a chance to post my thoughts on Sam. I'll admit I voted No in the Sam Allardyce poll, but my reasoning was largely down to getting Sam or one of the other more sought after managers like Silva or Fonseca. That said, when it looked like we went back to him, I was on board pretty much thereafter. I think as fans, we should look at the postives he brings.

+ English - there isn't an English manager in the Top 7, and why isn't there? He'll be able to relate to most of these lads and get the message across. There are a lot of English players in our team. And with Moshiri, Everton aren't skint like they used to be, hopefully Allardyce gets to spend some money on players he wants.
+ Play-style - there was a 'short' period at Bolton where they were playing good football. True, some of it was dour, but he got results for an incredibly average squad. At the other premier league teams he was trying to beat relegation so I don't think you can really talk about style there.
+ Defence - Big Sam's substitutions were spot on on the weekend. Sure we would have liked to see Niasse run out with 15 minutes to go, but he brought Schneiderlin on (ok Schneiderlin has been terrible this season) a defensive mid, and Keane a defender to shut the game out. We all know in the prem mistakes get punished, and his subs made sure the defence had cover.

Big Sam had a bit of a pout, when he wasn't first choice for manager, but 6m a season can turn frowns upside down. There's still plenty of time in the season, but the Christmas period will really be key in whether they can have a tilt at Euro places.
