Sampdoria is only an hour and a half from Milan. I suppose it makes sense if he's just got married and the wife is breaking his balls. Shame if it's true though.

It wasn't so long ago he was described by his manager as a “gift from the footballing Gods”.

Now Samuel Eto’o could well be the gift that Everton FC are preparing to hastily re-wrap and pass on.

Sampdoria’s interest in the striker is ongoing, even if the ECHO understands that his Goodison exit is not as clean-cut and close as some are reporting.

Whether he is the equivalent of an expensive present which initially dazzled but quickly lost its lustre, or it is really the 33-year-old pressing for a return to Italy remains unclear.

But one thing is certain; Eto’o’s status has changed from October when Roberto Martinez waxed lyrical about having the the former Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan striker on-board.

Back then it seemed like the coup which ticked every box (not least blowing a raspberry at Liverpool who passed up the opportunity to sign him and opted for Mario Balotelli instead).

Eto’o appeared to have an abundance of stamina despite those Jose Mourinho jibes about his age, and his goal-scoring instinct was still as deadly as ever. A brace at Burnley and a goal in Europa League action confirmed it.

But fast forward six weeks as Everton began to struggle, the question over who should play in the number 10 role behind Romelu Lukaku became more loaded, particularly when constant shuffling didn’t help.

Eto’o still had plenty to offer, even as the Blues slump worsened, and continued to start games until after the Newcastle defeat on December 28.

An unused substitute against Hull on New Year’s Day, he then came from the bench against West Ham in the original third round FA Cup tie.

Eto’o had to twiddle his thumbs against Manchester City last weekend, but if - and he hasn’t said so publicly - he is disgruntled about playing time, it’s hard to sympathise.

Martinez has used the veteran frequently.

The truth may be that Eto’o wants to return to Italy for personal reasons. He still has many friends in Milan, where some news outlets suggest Sampdoria would be prepared to let him reside and commute to Genoa.

Asked about the potential move on Tuesday, Martinez was fairly sanguine. He will, he said, assess what is best for Everton and Eto’o.

They might be two different things - and only one should really matter to the Blues boss.

Surely his conclusion on what suits Everton will be the experienced Cameroonian remaining on Merseyside until the summer at least.

The Toffees eggs for the 2014/15 campaign are stacked perilously high in a basket marked ‘Warsaw, May’. In truth, the Europa League is the only thing fans are clinging onto now.

Martinez could do worse than remind Eto’o of something he said in November.

“My goal is clear,” Eto’o told the ECHO. “I came here to help this club win things and the Europa League is a big one. I have never won it.”

It’s about the only trophy he hasn’t lifted.

But all his big-game experience, nous, and winning mentality could be invaluable if Everton are to truly push for the European glory which would rescue their season from the doldrums.

Martinez can be a persuasive character. After all, he talked Eto’o into picking Everton over bigger financial offers last summer.

He should exercise his charm again, and persuade the most decorated African player of all time to hold off saying ‘arrivederci’ for now.

I think we're moving him on to get him off the wadge bill.............with Kone fit again bill probably wants to save the coin and get Joseph a new technicolured dream coat......

This is absolutely spot on. So what if he wants to sod off to Italy half way through a season. He needs to knuckle down and put the effort in and sort his head out. 4 more months and he cam swan off to Italy then. IF it's Everton pushing him out well they better have a bloody good replacement lined up because someone with his European experience is going to be very hard to replace. I'm not arsed about him in the league, if he scores that's a bonus. It's in the EL where I think he's worth every penny we pay and why we shouldn't be looking to ship him out.

Sampdoria continues to negotiate to acquire Samuel Eto'o. The former Inter striker is willing to take a pay cut compared to what he earns at Everton, 3 million euro per season net of taxes plus bonuses, but is still negotiating with Sampdoria on the length of the contract: the Italian club is offering a year and a half contract with option for next season tied to matches played, while Eto'o wants all the years guaranteed. There are still details to be addressed but the deal could be completed on Saturday.

At the time there was no option. Kanchelskis was in all kinds of trouble with unfriendly people and need money or it was something like that.

But Back to Etoo still not clear if he will be gone or stay here. Is it down to talk of wages? and I take it there will be no fee just goodbye.

Exactly.

My only worry about all of this is the europa league. As much as we don'y want to admit it, Eto'o in that team is more likely to do well than a europe team without him. I'm not talking wolfsburg esq games, but the second legs away to spain/portugal etc The games where you just need that one player to reach in from experience and win you the game. The one player who the other team doesn't want to see coming on when there is the chance he could knock them out.

If he wants to go then get rid by all means, but unless we are signing some quality player for actual money this window to replace him then it leaves a gaping hole in our season that we don't need right now.

Ha ha ha....no way are we paying him £100k a week.

They have that wrong....its £55k GROSS.

If this is relating to Caesar's assassination it's outstanding work. Fitting in so many ways.

If not I have literally no idea.

If it isn't it's the most remarkable fluke reference ever!

From the Echo -

More rumours surrounding Samuel Eto'o's potential Everton departure doing the rounds this morning. The Cameroon striker is said to have no issues with Everton or Roberto Martinez, but wants to return to Italy for family reassons.

Sporting Witness reports: "The striker doesn't need huge contracts and has proven so much in his career already that he has no personal hurdles to force himself over, what's important for Eto'o right now is the best environment for his family and their future.

"The Eto'o family have a home in Milan and that's still their main base. During December, Eto'o married his long term girlfriend in the Italian city and invited many of his friends from there, perhaps it was those events which made it clear to the footballer that an Italy return needed to happen."

It is also said that Eto'o has rejected big money offers to move to Brazil in order to stay in Europe.

Hope it is a case of this. Personally I'd rather he stayed, but I can understand for reasons like this. It would be disappointing either way if it was a case of him or us wanting rid for other reasons.

So what are we talking about here? Are we saying his contract will be torn up? He still has 18 months left doesn't he so these teams should have been negotiating with us unless we've agreed to let him go elsewhere

If he stays for the rest of the season then I imagine he would start enough games to trigger the second year clause, although as he technically only has 6 months atm I would guess we would receive some sort of nominal fee. Would be great if we got more tho.

I am not that bothered whether he stays or goes, a marginal player at best. WE need to concentrate on those players who will be here next season and their development.
