Scotland’s Greatest Night

Danny McGrain is another Scottish player considered top class, full back. Was picked to play in the World X1 vs the World Cup winners. Not sure if World Class but pretty close if not.

Ah, but can you call him world class based on the discussion around consistency and longevity?
There’s documentaries on Baxter worth watching if you’ve got some spare time. He was playing an Austrian team for Rangers in Europe when he got his leg broken. And that’s when his decline started. That’s when he started drinking etc. But he’s maybe the most “Gallus” character I’ve came across in football. I think if he didn’t break his leg and went on to fulfil his potential he’d be the greatest midfielder to come from Britain and one of the best ever. He had that much talent and he had the character, personality.

Not sure you can call someone world class if they never fulfilled their potential. His output for a winger was quite poor also. I'd bracket him alongside Gascoigne.

He wasn’t a winger, he was left sided central midfielder. He was better than Gasgoine.
But that’s the Jim Baxter story, he never reached his potential, but from what we did see, he was a special talent. That’s why there’s always a question mark about him.

Attacking midfieler. Same thing. I disagree on Gascoigne.

Could go either way tomorrow, England’s last 5 visits to Glasgow have resulted in 3 wins and 2 draws, the most recent two being a 3-1 friendly win at Celtic Park in November 2014 and a 2-2 draw in a World Cup qualifier in June 2017. Scotland’s last win in this fixture was the 1-0 win at Wembley in the 2nd leg of the Euro 2000 playoff in November 99, their last win on home soil came in a 1-0 friendly win in May 1985

I think Scotland might win this one.

A Scottish Fitba player never reached his potential as he was an alcoholic.

You couldn't make it up could you.

Baxter was a poor mans Bryan Robson.
He started drinking after a leg break. Yeah ok, go look at Scotland vs England games in the 60’s when England was arguably at their best.
From 1960 to 1967, he was a leading member of a strong Scottish international team that lost only once to England, in 1966, shortly after he recovered from the leg fracture
