SCRAP VAR

VAR isn't the problem. The officials are. It's either corruption or incompetence.

I'd like to see the managers given 3 challenges each, where they can force the officials to review a decision. It won't stop the official making the wrong decision, but it gives them fewer places to hide.
No, do this and we wilmm on be heading towards quarters and ad breaks.

Football should ebb and flow. VAR is completely incongruous with football. It’s just awful.

I'm all for goalline technology but the VAR has been a total nonsense and has pushed refs into the headlines even more when the idea was presumably to lighten their load.
At the end of the day it's swings and roundabouts - the best teams come top and the worst teams last. Get on with the game and get yer eyes tested ref!

Yeah, but that's exactly the subjectivity we're all pissed off with, isn't it? And it's another layer of it we don't need.
Making everything open to review would mean managers could abuse VAR, though. They could time waste, kill the opposition's momentum, stifle a crowd's celebrations.

I just think there needs to be a halfway house. I don't think a single challenge would work. Once the challenge is used up, you are back at the mercy of the officials.

I 100% believe we need VAR. there's too much money involved for it not to be. I just don't think it works in its current guise.

Get ex players or the like on VAR and get rid of the refs who are buddies with the onfield ref. They like to protect bad decisions so they are not seen to question a mates decision

There are lots of ways it could be improved.

I think the VARs ought to be accountable. I think we should hear the conversation with the referee, and I think the reasons for each decision should be published after the match.

I also think there should be an appeals panel, like there is for red card offences. Even if all that comes of it is an official apology, that would be something - and would be a good metric to keep track of which teams are getting the most favours from VAR, and which are being treated most poorly.

Ruining football. Was bought in to get rid of ref errors, but has made things worse. It’s taken away the joys of what football is all about.

VAR should remain in its current form for offsides only in my opinion, with the captain of each team having two appeals to use during the match to challenge contentious calls such as penalities or straight red cards.

The biggest issue with VAR is the criteria in which things get referred back to the referees which is leading to far too many inconsistent calls. Just using Everton as an example, why was Allan's red card sent back to the referee whilst Jordan Ayew's challenge on Gordon was not? The VAR officials are hiding behind this 'clear and obvious' nonsense rather than just assessing each decision at face value.

An appeals format I think would allow the onfield referee to go about his business more freely without thinking that every decision he makes/doesn't make is being scrutinised at Stockley Park, whilst teams would have it in their power to dispute calls which would remove the inconsistency that we're seeing.

The NRL have a Captain's Challenge for their Rugby League.

That seems to work pretty well. It is limited to 1 per half but if successful, a further challenge is allowed and so on until unsuccessful. In the matches I watch here in the UK it is not being abused.

I recognise this only applies to Ref's decisions and would not be practical if it could be made in respect of a VAR official decision.

I still think similar would be worth considering and would be some improvement on the present positoion

Yeah but the Rugby League also respects the refs authority and don't try to cheat their way through every single game like footy does.

Think a lot of the issues are resolved if the referees are mic'd up and deliberations can be heard by at least TV spectators. At the minimum that gives people insight and lets individuals be held to account for good or bad decisions. Tbh accountability I think is half the problem too, an apology from PGMOL isn't enough with say the fine margins of relegation battles and the like - not sure how you solve that though.
