2020/21 Seamus Coleman

First off,
i don't agree when you say that he was terrible during the tenure of any manager he played under and what relevance that would have to his ability as a manager I have no idea.

When a manager gets sacked..... whose fault do YOU think it is if not the players ?
Maybe you think Seamus should call Moshiri a rotten bar steward for getting rid of the manager and even though results were terrible he was absolutely 100% certain it had nothing whatsover in any shape or form anything to do with the players.

Possibly you think that Seamus should say that he is not in favour of a new managerial appointment and that he would use his position as captain to make sure this new manager would not last long in the job and he would do everything he could to get him sacked.

He's been 90% terrible since Martinez second/third season.

When a manager gets sacked it's everyone's fault not JUST the manager, but ultimately the manager gets the stick.

Nar I think Coleman should just talk less and get on with his footy. Sick of hearing him everytime the team are useless in a game saying they let the fans down and they will improve zzzzzzzz

@blueblue

Coleman went down in my estimation when he 'consoled' Son.

The very player who was out for retribution and went in on Gomes from behind with a typically dirty tackle.

I cant imagine any multiple title winning captains doing that...they would be baying for blood.

Great player before his injury but certainly hasnt shown any winning leadership that stands out to make him "a prime candidate to be a future Everton manager".

Gutted hes not been replaced in the squad let alone the team.

Never thought of it like that . Imagine Stevie G watdhing Carra get smashed . I know he's about as scary as a squashed slug but he definitely would lose his head .
We all know what would happen if Roy Keane witnessed such a thing .
I like Seamus , he seems like a well brought up , honourable man but I don't think he's totally captain material. I hope Davies improves somewhat as there's a captain somewhere beneath all that hair and hideous material .

I can only compare with Keane, Gerrard, Vieira and others and theres not one who has been known to console opposition players after they smashed a team mate from behind.

As for myself, if i was playing a team game and someone did that to me i certainly wouldnt be happy with my captain consoling the guy who 'attacked' me.

Id actually be furious with Coleman.

….people react differently, even captains. Neither of our two most successful captains were in the Keane or Viera category & I’m content Labone & Radcliffe were the professionals they were.

I have no recollection of Coleman consoling Son but i assume he‘d been some distance away from the incident and concluded it wasn’t meant. I think Gomes himself was quick to shake hands with Son the next time they played against each other. Posters make a lot of these incidents, I’ve seen the Mirallas penalty highlighted as another incidence of weak leadership, but I think that’s far from reality.

i saw Coleman a few times last season making a point of going to opposition players and giving them an earful for being out of order but such incidents are rarely mentioned. He’s coming to the end of his playing days and needs replacing but he’s still got plenty to offer on the pitch. Off the pitch, he clearly has total respect of his teammates, a series of high-profile Managers who have managed the best during their career and the Irish international set-up who speak glowingly of him.

I think that says a lot more than posters on here who have an agenda against him.

Keane and Gerrard are also pretty abhorrent people.

Hard to have an 'agenda' against someone who used to be a great player and just comes across as a boring bloke.

Would you say that if you were playing and had been on the receiving end of something similar to Son's 'retribution' (as Gomes was) you would have welcomed your captain going to the oppositions dressing room after the match to tell your 'assailant' that he wasnt to blame and consoling him?

Personally I wouldn't care what my captain was doing. I'd care what my doctor and physio were doing.

My feelings towards the player who injured me would depend on a number of factors but a team mates opinion wouldn't be one of them.

Hard to claim some posters dont have an agenda against him when they've a demonstrable posting history that suggests they do.

….I doubt Gomes gave it a second thought & it was clear he made a point of shaking Son’s hand next time they played. Gomes didn’t hold any bad feelings against Son.

In respect of that incident, i likened it to going through an amber light; usually nothing happens but on this occasion it caused a major crash. Son was miffed he wasn’t given a free kick and purposefully meant to catch Gomes. I don’t for one moment believe he meant to injure him. Because of the outcome of his action, it was right he was sent off & the red card shouldn’t have been rescinded.

….fortunately my only operation was on my knee in 1976 and i never had a major injury from an incident like that. Genuinely, I played most games under a skipper who knocked blokes out but I wouldn’t be thinking or worried of his reaction if my ankle was contorted from that sort of foul.

Different if an opponent had gone over the top or assaulted me. Not sure if you were around when the Altrincham player went over the top and broke John Connolly’s leg. Gary Jones understandably laid the bloke out with one punch. Son’s was a clear foul, i don’t think it was violent or intended to hurt Gomes but the outcome meant it deserved punishment.

I’m not particularly saying Coleman should’ve consoled Son but too much is made of the fact he did.

We'll have to agree to disagree then Eggs...i thought it was a cowards act of violent retribution from behind...

With that in mind I wouldnt have taken too kindly to it if i was either the victim or the captain.

It is notable that successful captains in the premier league have done the reverse of Coleman.

…it was red mist, it was wrong and it deserved punishment because of the outcome. Those type of incidents happen regularly but rarely result in serious injury. The cowardly ones are the over the top, when you go low and trust your opponent to do the same.
