2021/22 Seamus Coleman

Played very well today.
He was ok today for the most part. Once again though an unforced error by him, when he played the ball back into our 6 yard box under no pressure, right in the space between Pickford and a Brentford forward, nearly cost us a goal, Pickford managed to get to it first, but, it was yet another example of Coleman having lapses of concentration. It's not his fault, he should not have been first choice right back for a couple of seasons now and he is running himself ragged trying not to let anyone down.

Coleman's never say die attitude has been a boon to him throughout his very good career, but, it is currently preventing him from doing a Gary Neville and realising he just isn't quite good enough any more and retiring before he tarnishes the good memories of his career.

The only reason that was a risky pass was because Jordan missed the ball when trying to clear it.

If I was an everton player i'd be looking to get out of the club while in my prime. How many players have gave thier entire career to us and be a great player for most of it. To be absolutely hounded and target of some serious abuse cause they have gotten past it.

We treat our career serving quality players like dog crap.

and in the same breath complain about a lack of loyalty in the modern game

Think it was clear that the players were under instruction to try to pass the ball out and take a few more risks to be fair.
Passing the ball out is great, but, you never pass it back into your own 6 yard box unless the only people in and around the danger area are your team mates. I'm all for the way we seem to be trying to set up under our new manager, but, that was a total lack of concentration by Coleman and cold easily have cost us a goal, as indeed, similar lapses by the same player have cost us goals his season.

This isn't me having a pop at Seamus by the way, I think he's been a great servant to the club, but, he really shouldn't be a first choice right back in the premier league at this stage of his career.

Its like whiping an old faithful war horse till its bloody cause its old and has arthritis. The military have failed to get a new one in and its doing its best but we are screaming and whipping the poor thing.
Sounds like Animal Farm and Boxer except Seamus has given everything he has to this club and to Ireland. He has had horrific injuries but has fought his way back instead of being a sick note.

That is true, but there does with all players come time to hang up the boots. In the case of Coleman when will he think it is time? For many of us that time has passed him lingering on has delayed us sorting out the RB position. We now have a new young player who should be getting experience and the chances should be now not wait until next season.

I find this thread to be quite useful for some personality profiling.

I know that's what we were always told but the games changed now. Passes like that get played all the time, when it goes wrong it's obviously a disaster but it's just a normal part of the game these days for teams who want to play possession football and/or 'beat the press'. It might still have been a lapse in concentration or badly executed - i've not seen it other than at the game so can't really say - but I don't think it was some mad decision he made, he was just trying to play the way he'd evidently been told to.

Have another look at it, it was a poor pass into a poor area, especially when you consider that Pickford is not the calmest keeper in the league.

We get it, he’s Irish.

Yeah like I say i'm not arguing it wasn't a poor executed pass i'm just saying playing passes like that is a normal point of the game now for teams who aren't still stuck in the dark ages like we have been for the last few years. There will definitely be teething problems as players get used to being asked to keep the ball alive etc, if the worst it gets is situations like that one then we'll have handled it pretty well.
