2024/25 Seamus Coleman

Was just surprised at you getting so offended at what was basically a nothing comment lad.

Given he used it in context with stereotype, he basically was saying he regards it as untrue. Else he wouldn't have used stereotype.
I don't think your definition of the word stereotype is correct mate.

Britannica Dictionary definition of STEREOTYPE. [count] : an often unfair and untrue belief that many people have about all people or things with a particular characteristic.

Given how he used it in the sentence construction, then it kind of is.

Irish are thick, all Americans are fat, Brits all have bad teeth, french eat snails and frogs and stink of garlic, Italian men are leches, Jewish people are tight with money, Belgium's are boring.

All stereotypes, all untrue

Yea, oversimplified mate.

Check out Cambridge also or Webster, or any other online dictionary - the common denominator is that a stereotype is not necessarily true and certainly is t true on a broad scale.

It was blindingly obvious he wasn't saying 'all Irish are thick'.

He used the stereotype to illustrate stupid behaviour with a predictable outcome.

He could very much as easily have said 'doesn't do the stereotype of all footy players being thick any favours'

Just don't think a throwaway comment in the context it was used is any reason to get upset about, and yup that's coming from someone who is way more Irish than anything else

But he didnt say that did he?

Even if it was a throwaway comment, racial stereotyping can be very damaging and shouldn't be tolerated in society.

You being 'way more irish than anything else' wont change my mind on this to be honest.
