2024/25 Seamus Coleman

Seamus Coleman is a football player, he doesn’t pick himself either for Everton or Ireland, in this time of people only looking out for themselves it is hard to contemplate of a person who feels it is his duty to go out on the field of play and to give of his best when picked to do so. Seamus has to believe that if a manager picks him to play then he is the best available option, he then has to do his best. It is not his fault that he is not the player he was, it is not his fault that he is still the best available option. His man owes nobody anything, he has always done his best, he has been up there with the very best and he is now on the slid but he is still in there battling for his club and country. Professional footballers are not the best examples of humankind, if you were to draw up a list of professional players both past and present I am of the opinion that Seamus Coleman would be pretty near the bottom of that list.

He does owe us something, because we literally pay his wages. If his legs can no longer play 2 games per week, or barely even one game per week, then he should have retired from international duty.

I get the appeal of having him in the dressing but why not invite him on to the staff while he does his badges (assuming he wants to)? If not, he's wasting valuable minutes that could be going to a young player who will never get experience otherwise.

The time to let him go was in the summer. I can understand him not wanting to go out on the Leicester injury so he came back last year and played a few games in the run in so that was the perfect time to go out. Just hanging on for the final year at Goodison is too sentimental. Also horrible planning considering Young's already been found out by pace in the first game and his future selection will cause issues with the crowd.

Negligent from the club not to demand he retires from ROI before offering him a new deal aswell. Now he's injured and it's a big selection problem for Villa and probably Leicester game.

He's a footballer, mate, not the second coming. Some people need to chill out and stop beatifying people who kick about a plastic bag filled with air.
Windy, you would be hard pressed to find a more chilled out person than myself, furthermore, as a Northern Ireland Protestant I really don’t hold with beatification. The point of my post was that Seamus Coleman is not the one at fault here. If Ireland or Everton put him in the position where he is the best option available then that is on them.
I have met him twice and each time he was a prefect gentleman, I cannot say that about all the public figures I have met.

I'm sure he's a lovely fella, but he's deluded himself into thinking that his body can cope with more punishment than it really can. That shouldn't be Everton's problem, I agree with you that it's not his fault that we keep giving him contracts and that Ireland keep picking him, but for some reason we keep chucking contracts at him while he continues to play whilst unfit for his national team and coming back injured. I'm sure he's trying to do his best for everyone but, in doing that, he's actually not giving his actual best to anyone.

Is there precedent for club contracts to stipulate that the contractee refrain from playing for their national team?

(I ask because I don’t know. I wouldn’t favor such a stipulation.)

The club is stupid enough to retain him. Not his fault whatsoever. Not Young’s fault. It’s the way the club has been run with “BLUOOO LEGENDS LAHH.” They are the ones that keep immortalizing him, bigging up his ego and parading him to the press.

I know hes a proud irishman but seriously.. he needs to realise that his playing days are coming to an end and all the stinky stuff he's dropped us in, by continually playing for his nation.
He was literally just getting back to a bit of fitness and hes gone and injured himself again.

Didn’t really injure himself mate. That slab head idiot Maguire raked his foot down Seamus’s leg and Achilles. Any player would have got injured after that.

Do people really expect him to quit international football because he might get injured?

You only get the one career, Seamus is making the most of his despite his limitations.
That's fine, but don't call him a club legend or a servant. He's a professional earning a living, and whilst in the past he's earned his money and then some, it's debatable if he currently is.
