'With Keane having now retired from international football and O'Shea no longer a regular starter, the Everton full-back has become a figurehead, and he feels his form has improved, particularly for his club following the arrival of new manager Ronald Koeman.

However, he has insisted positive comments he made last week about the Dutchman were in no way intended as a criticism of his predecessor, Roberto Martinez.

Coleman said: "I saw something during the week that I took a swipe at Roberto Martinez, and that definitely wasn't the case. I have never said a bad thing about a manager that I have played for in the past.

"Roberto Martinez was good to me and taught me a lot going forward. When you are asked to compare managers, you always look like you're hammering another manager, which is never the case.

"Every manager is different and I just wanted to clear that up in terms of Roberto Martinez. I never took a swipe at him and I would never take a swipe at a manager.

"I just want to improve and impress every manager I play for, and they're all different."'
Good lad, Seamus. He should be our captain as well as his country's. He stands up and takes criticism as well as plaudits.

I'd much rather have one of him than ten of the snides he was rubbing shoulders with in that dressing room last year. You need a man as a captain. Seamus is far and away the best man in that outfit.

He hasn't put in any bad performances since he came in though, which is the point you continue to ignore.

I have said many times already on this ..... I wouldn't drop him now. I just believe if Someone gets a chance and performs ... they stay in the team. That's my view and won't change .

Playing devils advocate... conversely there is a danger of breeding an unwanted level of pressure and tension when a single mistake or bad game could put you back in the reserves.
Not a good atmosphere for breeding team play or for developing a young player. It is better imo to know that when you break into the first team you will have a certain level of loyalty to allow you to develop and make the odd mistake. Otherwise you end up with sterile, safety first, almost panicking football that results in at best narrow 1-0 wins but mostly defeats and draws and a lack of unpredictability to entice the fans or confuse the opposition..

That's how you find out which youngsters are good enough... look at what happened to Barkley with no pressure on him from bobby. Stones too
