The fact, and this has been for all managers from Moyes onwards, that the club plays 4-5-1 for the vast majority of games really deserves some kind of expert scrutiny.

Coaches, managers, players have all come and gone and yet that is how we play; we've even occasionally played differently and got better results, yet we go back to it. It ruins players and may in fact be the number one thing wrong with the club.

Quite. We could even play an adaptation of 352 whether that's 3412 or whatever. The 451 clearly isn't working this season. The % of defending exceptionally well and hoping not expecting to bag a goal from a set piece just isn't paying dividends. And when we concede the first goal...

Well yeah, if the 18th placed team also finishes on 34 points with a worse goal difference, obviously. 34 points sends you down 90% of the time sadly though mate.

I'm not saying its good Mike, but it would keep you up most seasons. I'm not going look back over the last 10 years, but given our superior goal difference we would nearly always stay up.
