@GrandOldTeam pointed out we need a pragmatist right now as the club lurches in uncertainty and with limited resources both in the squad and money to fix it. Everton’s existence next few years is to somehow eek out sufficient points to avoid a catastrophic relegation while they get settled into a new stadium and monetise it as a Premier League venue to get maximum commercial advantage from it. An idealist hasn’t got the tools or money to get Everton playing as they’re committed to, Dyche finds ways to get points over the line - as would be demonstrable minus the points deduction this year.
As posted on the page before Everton have one of the highest retentions of ball further up the pitch which should appeal to Evertonian love of front foot football and aggression against all opponents. I don’t think the football is all that bad to be honest, the guile Dyche has brought is complimented by some actual footballers like Branthwaite, Garner, McNeil who can pick a pass. Compare that against the ineffective idealism of Lampard before.
Everton have to find aways to turn 0 points into 1 point and 1 points into 3 points by way of marginal gains with limited tools to do so. Here’s another way Dyche is finding that edge.
He’s smart and what Everton need now. The future is uncertain and any sort of march to glory a long way away. Success in this purgatory we find ourselves in is retaining Premier League status and lowering the age of the squad so that when sustainable process is possible that we have the tools to do it.
The hiring and firing of Everton Managers every year hasn’t helped either on the pitch nor off it with the annual compensation packages we’ve been paying. Time for patience and pragmatism, both with Dyche and the fans.
