Everton — 5.7 goals fewer than expected

“A dominant performance and at last the xG pays us back,” Sean Dyche, the Everton manager, said after his team’s victory over Bournemouth. “I’ve been going on about that but the more statistically you do those things they will happen and they have.”

Everton endured a torrid start of the season, with four defeats from their opening five league fixtures, in which they scored only two goals. However their expected goals — a measure of chance quality — indicated that there were more positive signs. Everton have created chances worth 14.7 xG, but have scored only nine goals this season, seven of which coming in the past three matches.

….’spineless protecting our net’ is so at odds with the Dyche stereotype. You read posters on here saying it’s ‘hoofball’ to an isolated forward because too much emphasis is on defence, then you see the stats and posters now saying his tactics are too attacking and leave us too wide open.

I’m not clever enough to know what to make of it, perhaps the anti-Dyche faction will never be content.

I havent read that highlighted bit on here much at all. The dyche stereotype comes from the Burnley days when he parked the midfield to protect the defence. Hence why that awful manager koeman paid 30m for keane giving no thought it seemed to two very different styles.
Everton have conceded more goals from set pieces this season than any other team btw. Which is so at odds with dyche statement that he wasnt bothered by that because its how he's set up his team for years.
Cut the anti dyche sh!te aswell. Any Everton fan has a right to question zero points at home before bournemouth.

In fairness, we are fourth in big chances created in the league. That means little though considering the opposition we have played and the lack of goals until recently. It is up to him to re-write the narrative.

As of right now we are spineless when it comes to protecting our net and it has cost us many points. One clean sheet with the opposition we have played this far is pathetic. All of the breakdowns (particularly from our wingbacks) have been pathetic. We have missed easy chances sure. But you know what loses games? Gift-wrapping goals.

It starts from top to bottom. I don’t want managers to talk about how good their team looked. We have looked fine. I want them to win games.

We've played 5 of the current bottom 7 already.
I hope the bournemouth game gives hope confidence anything.
We're gona need it from now on.
Seems to be this narrative with some that you cant question Dyche now. Make no mistake we needed to bank more points by now. I want him to do well as Everton staying up is all i give a toss about.

Our counter attacking style might actually suit playing the more progressive teams. It's very rare that we pick up all of our points where we expect. We picked 6 from Arsenal at home and Brighton away last year when no one gave us a prayer of getting anything.

I thought we might do Arsenal. We've beat them a few times at Goodison over the past few seasons. Brighton i thought would wipe the floor with us though.
Hope you are right. I think we've blown it a bit. We'll need to improve.

We got them off the back of an FA cup game at Utd and we were prepared and they were still tired and it paid off. This season they seem to be a bit loose at the back so hopefully with our new found love for xG and shooting we can take advantage of it.

We are averaging under a point a game having only played Arsenal of any real note. Villa are the level below the “big 6”.

You want us to take close to 10 points from away games of Liverpool, Wham, palace, Burnley, forest & Spurs.
With home games against Brighton, man united, Newcastle and chelsea.

Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we lose all 4 home games. And of the away games. The only ones we are likely to get anything from are Burnley, palace and forest and I would bet on us winning any of them.

I’ll happily be proved wrong by Dyche across these games.

I think it's a mindset thing isn't it. For me on balance we've taken less points than we have deserved in these opening games. I tend to think that things balance out over a 38 game season so I think we'll pick up more points than a betting man might wager over the next 10.

Remember how crap we were last season, teams like West Ham barely picked up more points than us last season. I think sometimes we overestimate the teams outside the top 2.

It was unfortunate but we started the game extremely well, looked good, didn't take our chances and then conceded two goals from set pieces. We have actually put in three really good performances this season and I can see a team taking shape. I am much more optimistic provided DCL stays fit. I think you are far to quick to blame the manager.
Exactly, DCL on the pitch. Not Dyche

It was bad but football is very rarely predictable. Even the best Moyes and Martinez teams threw in some really bad performances out of no where. I feel like the start of our season has been very disjointed because of the lack of a striker etc. but I think the team is finally starting to take shape and I would expect results to improve. We have some decent footballers in the side now that can actually score goals/create from midfield. The aim is to finish above 15 this season and I think we have enough to do that barring injuries.
We do have a decent spine to the team, and forwards to keep us out of trouble. If only we had a manager to shape those players correctly, by choice..

I’m not sure West Ham are the best example considering they have only lost to Man City and Liverpool so far this season. Palace have only lost to villa and arsenal as well.

Like I say, hope I’m proven wrong.

I hope Dyche's learned from poor midfield selections that have cost us at least 3 points vs Luton.

The finishing against Fulham cost us, we can't hammer Dyche for that. But he's been supported since with Beto whom he needs to play more and use DCL more intelligently, whom he's mis-used at points this season. Also needs to drop Gueye and tighten up defence.

We weren't good enough vs Wolves, Sheff Utd and didn't lay a glove on Arsenal really (albeit they're in a good patch right now). Manager churn doesn't suit us but more 'meh' against the likes of Luton, Wolves etc and he'll run out of games to take 3 points.

Quite a few have pointed out his get-out-of-jail card might be there are at least 4 teams worse than us this year in the league.

Keep the faith, but keep improving Sean!

This of course takes time, like improving all areas of the team. i think the latest window the team looks better considering our financial constraints and big mistakes in the past. I think Thelwell and Dyche should get some credit. If other cant see positive progress then im not sure what people are expecting. I can definitely see progress overall with our performace levels. But this is a long project to get us back anywhere near consistent in the top half of the table.
