Transfer Rumour Sean Longstaff

Possibly his most involved game of the season (without going through much effort to find out anymore...)

Scores a nice goal (although Foster should probably save it) but immediately misses a sitter afterwards, although I haven't got a clue what St Maximin was doing in the build up.

Not mad against our rumoured £1m bid to be honest. If we are (foolishly at this point) still supporting Benitez in the transfer market then maybe we should top our offer out at £5m. Newcastle have absolutely no FFP concerns though so it really makes no ends to them selling on the cheap now or releasing on a free in the summer. He'd be fine as a Davies replacement squad player I guess, perhaps the only benefit of having a cold hearted scoundrel like Benitez as manager is that he won't give two craps about booting people like Davies out the club.

The midfield player we urgently need though is someone who is a specialist sitter. Someone who marshals the play in front of the back four, can take the ball from the defence on the spin and play forward passes. Longstaff certainly isn't that player.

He is better than Davies and better and cheaper than Delph who has had three good games in 18 months
I don’t agree that he’s better than Davies, Delph will be gone in the summer and, for the amount of times he is fit, he doesn’t need urgently replacing. Longstaff has had a cruciate knee ligament I believe, so I would have serious doubts about his ability to stay fit.

The thing is, in midfield, it’s a quality first choice creative man we need, or, if Benitez is intent on hoofing the ball over midfield, then it’s a quality sitter we need. What we don’t need is to be signing more bench fillers. We have enough squad fillers at the moment, it’s quality midfielders we need. Longstaff is 24 with a history of injury, so I don’t feel confident in us giving him a long term contract.

Could he be though?

He's still young but I've not seen enough of him to know if he could learn that role.

I keep telling myself I didn't rate Horne , Parkinson or Carlsey before they joined but we could really do with one of them now . It could up end like Nyarko , Gemmill or Claus too though .
Yep , who knows. He could turn out like Adrissa Gana Gueye who most people myself included had no expectation of.

Longstaff is a strange one because for about 6 months people raved over him and he was flavour of the month before going off the edge of a cliff.

If the waiter thinks he can get a tune out of him might as well get on with it as I fear that he is here for some time.

Bissouma would be the exact profile we need. A player who can sit and dictate from deep. He’d be massively expensive though. We need to be finding the next Bissouma before they become prominent in the premier league.

Ricky Martin or Enrique might be good for a one hit wonder summer tune and you can palm box your clit to his poster on your wall. But we are about to sign Ed sheeran. He'll produce the hits.

I feel to truly excel in that position, you need to have good positive passing range, a stellar first touch to control the expected hospital passes out from a goalkeeper and centre backs and a quick change of pace to skip by the first tackle to turn the other team around. Not to mention the off the ball skills such as strong positional awareness and tracking late runs. I haven't seen a great deal of Longstaffe but I can't say I've ever noticed these qualities in him - to me he appears to be 'busy' player who has high energy, strength on the ball, a fairly basic array of passes but decent presence on the pitch.

I would say he is a step up on Davies, but then who isn't?
