Separating artists from their works

Should works of art be destroyed if the artist was morally deplorable?

  • Yes, in all cases & circumstances

  • Not always, there are some exceptions

  • Art is for bourgeois wools

  • Cheese on canvas.

I require the sage considered advice of GoT whether art can be appreciated and lauded even when the artists have been despicable humans?
This mornings reports of the BBC building being attacked, or more to the point the Eric Gill statue, lead me to investigate who he was and why it would be attacked, and boy was it eye opening!
So should all this weirdos art be removed from public? Is there a time limit on when such behaviour can be ignored?

wonderful people can be terribly boring and terrible people can make wonderful works of art. i think removing art because the artist is a terrible person is almost certainly a bad idea (although maybe do your due diligence on artists) while removing art that glorifies terrible people (like the civil war monuments littered across the US south) is almost certainly a good idea.

TLDR; if you remove art because the artist is a suspect human, I suspect in the end you'll have no art remaining, yada yada yada human nature and good and evil

Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant, spit* to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Mother feck* him and John Wayne

Public Enemy.

Lostprophets is another level though isn't it?

My old band played a few gigs with them back in the early 00s just before they started blowing up worldwide.

Had several conversations with the singer who seemed pretty sound and perfectly normal at the time.

Messed up

I know (As I'm sure we all do) a fella who is fascinated with Nazi stuff. Not in a "Listen Mary" Falling Down kind of creep way but he's just intrigued by it all. he's got a few bits with symbols on and stuff but he's a pacifist. At least I think he is.

I guess it depends on the weirdo. Or if you like what the weirdo created. I don't know is the answer.
