Yeah, because the world of international football isn't littered with great club managers who fell on their face with a world class squad of international players.

Roberto...
  • resurrected Swansea City and put them on the path to the PL
  • managed a cup win over the richest team on the planet with the Dog & Duck
  • reopened the School of Science at Everton and banished forever the hoof era at the club
  • handed Everton their best PL season have had: 21 wins and 72 points (something Ancelotti wont even get us to)
  • became the best Belgium manager of all time and led them to a WC SF and top of the world rankings

Only the bitter bedsheet banner waving would fail to recognise that.
In the nicest possible way Dave relatively speaking and compared to many managers CV’s out there (our current manager included)...that’s not particularly impressive

Dog and duck players that Martinez actually signed for Wigan then resigned Kone and Alcaraz for us?

That first season was the school of science and some great football but then it went down hill rapidly after that

I absolutely believe Ancelotti will get us higher than Martinez did or ever could and also win a us trophy or two along the way

Also international management has got to be the easiest job for any half competent football manager in the world, he can only play Belgium nationals and they have a great generation of talent, it's not like he's scouted them from obscurity and made them play boss by not practicing free kicks, for how much of a nice guy Martinez was he wasn't good enough to be Everton manager

Any way Shani, in a bit, nice one again Bobby Blurt Box
I hope so, but the very real prospect is that even he wont with these players...which will just underline what an effort that first Martinez season was.

When you put it like that it was quite impressive up until the season 2 cliff and the inability to defend.

What do you think happened in seasons 2 and 3 that destroyed the positivity of the first year?
(And before you just say Baines you need to suggest what he was doing that seasoned reliable pros became alienated about).
Martinez was at fault for sticking with players who couldn't push on to better performances. Too loyal...then he was repaid with a stab in the back.

More fool him.

If it'd have been me I'd have had Baines and Jagielka and Howard down the road end of season one.

Howard i agree. Jags and Baines though still had a lot to offer at that stage i think. Playing from the back with Baines who had a great pass on him and for a while was the only England player in that set up that was capable of controlling a pass hit at pace?

To me it was that teams learned and picked on the weakness of zonal marking - and he refused to adapt. I like Martinez, don't get me wrong, but a good manager has to play with the players they have and compromise their ideal to fit.

That was his only fault? The man who said, in no uncertain terms, that he didn't train set pieces?
