After over 500 years of shipbuilding in Hampshire, it's announced today that no more ships to be built in Pompey..

Disgraceful political decision, the timing stinks.

All to do with Scottish referendum.

TBF they had come to that decision before the independence vote was even thought of.... However it is a real kick in the nuts to everyone at Portsmouth.

We should pull out of the EU, use the money to build up our maritime strength again (merchant and RN) and really build up the commonwealth economic ties......

Could be worse... You could be working for Anglesey council who today have sent out letters to all (approx ) 7000 employees seeking voluntary redundancies....... To the tune of 3000 posts. Almost halving the workforce.

Seems a really short sighted decision IMO. Once you lose those skills, its bloody hard to get them back.

There's not enough work for 3 yards, so unless we commission more ships one has to go..........unless the scots vote for independence, then the two on the Clyde will go........

Exactly. So Scotland goes it alone, and England cannot build its own ships anymore. For an island race, with the 7th biggest economy, and with most of our trade done at sea, not having the facility to build a new frigate is pretty short sighted imo.

Not really. Scotland will say yes or no. If yes, then Portsmouth will not close and we will rebuild. If no, then it's as it is.......

No surprise that it's BAe to be honest, they would've been given these shipyards by the Govt along with the MoD Ordnance Factories. Over time they have gradually closed down these places and used the sites for development, often transferring any remaining work to the factories that they owned prior to getting the MoD ones.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they haven't shown much willing to take on the Orders so that the shipyards can be redeveloped.
It also wouldn't surprise me if it's developed with attracting Visiting Cruise Ships in mind, what would that mean for Liverpool's' Cruise Terminal ?

The MoD Ordnance Factories & Shipyards were of course sold to BAe for £1 by the Govt. of the day to pay for the weaponry etc that was used in The Falklands War.
Now I wonder who that was ?

No doubt we'll have our Battleships manufactured in China in future along with all the other Crap that's made there.

Pretty soon none of us will have jobs... We can then devote our time 24 a hours a day to GOT and Danny can become supreme overlord of the unwashed masses....
