"We gave everything and that's representative of Everton - the fighting spirit. That's what marked me in my first week here and I realised it was a special club.

"Before I left I made sure I explained to the guys they have something really special and they need to fight to keep it because it's a special club and a special atmosphere and you don't see that everywhere."

I wonder if that's a subtle pop at Martinez and the boring style he's brought.
He's right to remind them of how easy they've got it at Everton.

At some evil, nasty, non-fabric clubs, the players have been known to face consequences for putting in shameful performances.

I think I just worry that better players didn't get anything.

Ah well. It's all over now.

It cost nothing.

It was the last game of the season and had no bearing on anything.

He'd played to the limits of his ability for five years but fell out with the boss in his last year.

It was the equivalent of someone leaving work who'd been paid the going rate for what they did, but people who'd been around them in that time wanted the chance to say "Thanks, and good luck in whatever you do next."

Even in this age, the club's still a family to many, players and supporters alike.

Even if he turns out to have been a hugely disruptive tit, it was the right thing to do. Sometimes sentiment rules over pragmatism.

Sadly not for me it doesn't. I don't really understand the sentiment.

Anyway, it's all over now.

Was happy to see him get a send off. Always feel a bit bad when one of our longer serving players don't get a goodbye.

That being said, wouldn't be surprised if Distin being a 'disruptive force' was saying something like 'hey, wtf are you making us play this way for? It's awful and we were boss last year playing another way, can we go back to it?'

One last note tho, man he was awful first half of the season

The man put in some great performances over the years. He was an excellent cb for our club and some of you should be ashamed of yourselves.......

Fair play to him, he's obviously worked very hard over the years to stay in shape to be able to be a Premier League centre half for as long as he has.

Maybe he was disrespectful, maybe he spoke out against Martinez or maybe Eto'o turned his head? We won't know until someone speaks out, but that doesn't take away the fact he was a good player for us for longer than I'm sure most of us were expecting.

For what, exactly? Is/was Disdain beyond criticism? No. For every great performance he put in there was always a howler not too far away; and when the team was short of confidence he was never once mr inspirational. Strange that, when he'd been a captain at another club

And for someone as experienced as him to not be able to get any direction on a header at either end of the pitch...........

I don't understand why people are calling him "average". He was our player of the season in 2012, and since settling in up until this season, has been the epitome of reliable and dependable. Not average, but in fact a player who has often bailed us out at the last minute, and been nothing less than good to excellent, in my eyes.

Clearly something's gone on behind the scenes, and it amazes me how everyone thinks they know enough to insult Distin. Whereas I know 1) I have no inside knowledge of the club and 2) I don't trust rags, so therefore I can't speak about these things, only what I do know. And that is that for 90% of his time here he's put in a great shift, kept himself in ridiculously good condition, been a supreme physically and aerially dominant covering defender, been a class act off the pitch and even found the time to regularly wind up kopites on Twitter. I couldn't have asked any more from him. He was 31 when we signed him and cost only £5m, yet we still got all this out of him. He has been an excellent transfer, and an excellent player, so a quick round of applause to say bye? That's really such a big deal?

This forum is just bell central this season.

Thought he was really good during his time here. Except for the first part of the season, that was pretty bad.

Good post.

'Fans' slate our players so much when they go out of favour, dip in form or get injured. He was a great player for us and at 37 it s time for him to move on.

Like you say something has happened, be interesting to see what it was.

Well said. Agree with what you have said there and unfortunately, it's not just this forum, it's been Goodison too.

Thankfully the whole crowd gave him a good applause on Sunday though.

It's hilarious how some of our fans take it to heart when a player stands up for himself and doesn't take abuse off people in the crowd with veins popping out of their head when we don't beat the likes of Palace away. Some of the abuse towards our players deserves challenging regardless of whether they put in a bad performance. It's not like they intentionally play badly is it?

That brings me to the Distin error in the derby semi. People on here are making out like it was a pre meditated mistake which he planned all game lol. How dare he be human and make an error when playing for the mighty Everton!

"Didn't win anything while he was here". Let's dismiss players like Cahill, Arteta and Jagielka etc too then. Our fans are deluded in thinking we deserve success because we're Everton. The reality is, not many teams win things these days with the gulf in spending power. Distin is also actually one of the only players in our team to have actually won a major honour too.
