Should you support your national team?

I can be a friend to you
I've started this thread following recent discussions on here, largely involving the general secretary of the Union of socialist scouse republics, commandant davek.

I listened to this podcast from some avowed commies, Marxists or 'comrades' and as part of this there is a discussion on why it is important for those on the left to support the England team. It has David goldblatt on, the author of 'the ball is round.'

Should be a poll really.

A question is, if you don't support your country in football then what else do you side against your country about?

Politics? War?

Of course it's possible that supporting England's opponents doesn't make you a Putin stooge or active security threat to the nation. I'm just saying it's suspicious.

I don't think I will ever understand the idea of supporting something purely due to the happenstance of being born somewhere.

If you feel an affinity to said place then of course, by all means crack on, but not everyone feels that way.
I think for a lot of people it's just conditioning. I support England simply because I've grown up supporting them and that's simply it

Well there is your affinity I suppose. Other people who you knew did it so you did (I am assuming?)

I support Everton because of those around me and also because their outlook on things broadly resonates with me (as opposed to the other lot). The fact that they were also the closest team to my house was a happy coincidence.

I agree on that, but likewise some people have this stupid belief we can't support England becuase we were born somewhere.
Such as scousers, which is just self pity nonsense, there's no reason for a scousers to be anti England, or anti royal either to be honest.
Liverpool is just a city like every other city in the UK, there all the same, Liverpool hasn't been hard done too, it hasn't got more self awareness or a better community spirit then anywhere else.

Well I wouldn't blindly support my nation in a war just because I am from that nation. Conversely I suppose its good to live in a nation where that type of thing is OK.

I don't look forward to international tournaments.

I'll watch England tournament games. (not qualifiers/friendlies)

I'm pleased if they win.

I'm not upset/annoyed of they lose.

I despair when I see people dressed up as crusaders or lions or whatever other bellendery they get up to. (that includes the ecstatic throwing of pints in some manufactured fan zone, hell on earth)

So you don’t understand why anyone supports their clubs either?

Yes exactly.

I'm just addicted to misery

I rabidly dislike my country of birth for its violent thieving history and the way it has been governed by corrupt elitists dance 1066. I also dislike the loutush English loon that votes in the same sociopathic uncaring self interested tory party every time there's an election, on the basis of mixing patriotism for racism.

But I'll generally want our sports teams to win as they're not responsible for what our overlords do.
