Silly Season January 2014

Honestly there's no one we can afford that would come into our (healthy) 11 straight away. So January, in general, should be about depth and youth and assuming that if we do buy someone it will take them a half a season to bed in anyway.

Preseason vs. the RS. Goal at 1:50.

I know YouTube videos are notorious for making players look better than they are, but he does look like he's got a good touch and a decent range of passing, and the vision to attempt such passes. Didn't he play for Aston Villa or someone on loan for a season?

Last year we didn't buy anyone in January (aside from Stones) and it ruined the season.

These were our Jan + Feb league fixtures:

Swansea City (H)
Southampton (A)
West Bromwich Albion (H)
Aston Villa (H)
Manchester United (A)
Norwich City (A)

We took 6 points from those games, before this we were above Arsenal, 2 points off 4th and 3 off 3rd. Afterward we were 7 points off 4th. If we had added just a couple of first XI players and managed 10-12 points from this easy run of games we would have been a good shout for 4th, but Moyes/the Board failed to strengthen and well you know the rest.

I think the squad is strong enough not to sign anyone this year and still challenge for 3rd/4th but ffs they owe us something for that utter fiasco of a January last year.

I need to stop thinking about this, but we could have had Negredo last year in January for a few million more. I'm not one to slate the board all the time (it's not that I like them I just can't be arsed talking about it all the time), but if the board had stepped up to buy Negredo, we'd be top of the league this year, and we might have made a run at Champions League last year. He was perfect for us and not that expensive for a proven striker. And now we see what he's doing at Man City.

Bradley is an excellent player and has the exact right attitude that means he would come in like Barry and do a good job without any hitches but I don't know if he would add much more to the midfield as he is not exactly a goal machine these days.

........as reported, it looks like Chris Long is on his way to MK Dons on loan. I know a lot on here like him (me included) and will watch his progress with interest. I suggest that some youngsters go on loan with a view to permanent deals (Duffy, Garbutt perhaps), I don't think this lad falls into that category but only time will tell if he's got a future with us.

In all seriousness, he's the best player (or at least the most influential) we (The US) have. Box to box, rarely ever puts a foot wrong. Always in motion, covers a ton of ground and very high football IQ (coach's son/been a pro since he was 16).

If he was available (loan maybe?), he would be an asset. But again, he's not going to come in and start over Barry or McCarthy, so I'm not sure we make sense for him. He still plays a lot for Roma, he just doesn't start every game.

On loan. They didn't use him so he went to Serie A where he stood out for Chievo before being sold to Roma where he is part of the midfield rotation and doing well.

I'm mostly joking because if we hold onto Barry we wouldn't need him as he's better than a squad player.

He would probably fit where McCarthy plays better than McCarthy (who I see more in the Barry role). Having said that, McCarthy won't be dropped and for good reason.

It's also a World Cup year, so this will be a strange window for a lot of players. They may want to move on but need to make sure they get the playing time needed. I don't think he gets it here.

Jermaine Jones would be a good fit here too quite honestly, and he'd be more of a depth-type than Bradley. But he probably needs to play more than Bradley does to make sure he's on the plane to Brazil.

He's currently forcing a move from Shalke despite being a starter. He also needs surgery that will put him out of action until late Spring. Most likely he's going to look for a move to the MLS.

I've mentioned it before, but I played with Michael Bradley on the Illinois ODP state team about 13 years ago. Was great back then, but I would never have guessed he would go so far as a professional player.

I'm not a huge Jermaine Jones fan.

Bradley doesn't need to worry about his spot. No one is starting ahead of him.

He's very much like Barry. He's looking for first team football on a regular basis in the Spring, but I can't see him getting that at EFC.
