Silly Season January 2014

A story about Arsenal seems to sum us up, and why we aren't title challengers anymore.

When Wenger was there with David Dien, he would say to him buy me that player for 8 million and David Dien would go off for negotiations and then say 'here you go Arsne, we paid 10, but he is your player now'. This happened to coincide with the title wins, the invincibles nd the trophies.

Now fast forward to now, if Wenger asks for a player for 8 million, (chairman/exec name escapes me) will go there with 8 million, and come back saying sorry arsene, he has gone to chelsea/barca/AC etc for money. This coincides with Arsenal not being competiteve at the business end of a season trophy wise.

The point in the little story is we are not paying what teams want, we pay what we want, and the players go elsewhere. We don't really negotiate signings, only sales. There has been many players over the past 10 years who have gone elsewhere when we could have upped our bid to match others. I have now forgot where i was taking this but you can see where i am coming from.

It seems like we really messed them around last time, although the full a/m up front on this one may be just because it's a release clause.
However it would be shocking if we haven't got 7mil liquid at the moment mate :)

Thing is they spat there dummy out and got 4M for him 6 months later. They Lost money the baboons!

Structured installment payments are nothing out of the ordinary with the large transfer fees these days.

Or ... you could do a 'Leeds' ...

Yea, I mentioned the consequence of their stance a page or so back mate, but if we're buying out through a clause, they've got every right to demand the payment :)

so can ever player buy their contract out with 12 months to go then?

Any player who signs a contract under the age of 28 I believe. It would be quite a low trick IMO to pull that on a club who has payed you handsomely over the years. Even so I'd turn a blind eye this once if Rooney pulled it to get himself back in the royal blue!

Yes you have to push the boat out sometimes to get someone you really want and not just match other clubs' bids. A bit like if you want to buy a house you really fancy.

27.5m for Fellaini
6m for Anichebe
5.5m- 7.5m for Jelavic

Someone at the club is very good at selling players. Now if only they weren't so penny-pinching when buying them.

And very good at buying them too...20m profit on those three. And look at Seamus, Jags, Distin, Baines etc.

I agree, we need to break the bank for one Big Player...comfortably beating our record 15m for Fellaini. Think it might happen in the summer rather than now, tho'.

Well yes very true, ultimately tho if the player wants out they have to risk an un happy player if they don't try and meet somewhere on negotiations. Having said that if someone wanted to take one of our stars by triggering there release clause I'd want the cash to re-invest tbf.

ThT has tweeted quite a few times about Rooney coming back. Not that I think he's 100% ITK but he usually doesn't say things on a wim or without any substance.

Yea, and I suppose if I was an Exec/director, I would want some sort of guarantee before potentially wasting time and disrupting the squad, like last years fiasco :)
