Silly Season January 2014

Well I've also heard Rooney say personal goal scoring records mean nothing, it's all about the team and them doing well...

That's the standard thing all strikers say in interviews. They want to appear modest and team players (which Wayne is anyway, to be fair).

The reality, if you know strikers, is obviously very different. Put yourself in his shoes, there's no way you'd give up the chance of club immortality. That's what kids dream of.

If you've read more personal interviews, rather than the usual post-match or press conference guff, then you'd know one of his main personal ambitions is to be Man Utd's record goalscorer.

Hang on, which is it?

Thing is, being Man Utd's top scorer is NOT what he dreamt of as a kid, and we all know that.

Not saying he'll sign for us now, in the summer, or necessarily ever... but your argument why he wouldn't is all over the place.

There's no reason on earth to say that an interview he does saying "it's not about personal records" is ANY less valid than one saying "I want to be Utd's leading all time scorer"... both are good soundbites that the fans of his current club will like to hear... and both are equally as likely as each other to be utter garbage compared to what may or may not be in his head.

Rooney doesn't look like he's going to sign a new contract though, so I doubt he's going to break it.

I'm sure they do want such things but let's get this starlight for whatever reason and to go wherever it may be, that boy wants out of utd, I've seen nothing to suggest that has changed. Think your massively overly thinking the importance of that goal record vs his un- happiness at that club.

Plus as others have said Rooney did not dream of being man utd all time leading goalscorer as a kid....he dreamt of doing such things with Everton, yet that didn't keep him here did it.

It's possible to be a modest team player and still itch to break records (see Thierry Henry).

It's not all over the place. Your reading comprehension is all over the place.

Kids dream of scoring important goals, of being top scorers etc. You might dream of doing it at your boyhood club, but if the reality instead offers you the chance to do it at Manchester bloody United, you'll go for that too.

happy to be proven wrong if/when he does move in the summer.
