From Peter Reid (perpetual crock who was finished), Andy Gray (has-been with injury problems), Paul Power (30+ veteran who'd never won a thing), Paul Rideout (average journeyman)... There's loads more.

Seem to recall a few moans about Gareth Barry too.

Agree! Take the loans away and the emergence of players like Barkley, Coleman and Stone and we would be in all sorts.

Moyes for all his failings could pick a player. Don't forget apart from building the squad we have, he bid on players like Banega and Negredo, well before City came in for him.

So far McCarthy aside, very underwhelmed. Even McGeady was on the verge of signing with Wigan before he went to Spartak.

FFS someone get Martinez a director of football, the guy is a class manager and brilliant for tactics, style of play and instilling a positive attitude in the players, but their is serious concerns over his eye for a player looking at his signings here and at wigan bar McCarthy

Alcaraz has been solid, McGeady has barely set foot off the plane, and Robles has had about half a save to make since joining. All of them, Kone included, are an upgrade on what we had in place (e.g. Heitinga, Naismith, Mucha and Vellios). Our problem in recent years has never been our starting 11 - it's been the fact that we turn into a pub side when one of them picks up an injury or gets tired. Even so, we've strengthened with loans - Barry for Osman, Lukaku for Jelavic, Deulofeu for Pienaar.

If there is money available, it makes sense that Martinez would want to hold that back for this window / Summer when he knows where we need sharpening. Given that, it stands to reason that he'd bring in reliable squad players at decent prices (ok Kone was a bit much for what we've seen, but we've seen barely anything) rather than rolling the dice on a couple of marquee signings and bringing in a couple of squad players on loan.

Lads, we're not signing Kenwaye Jones. Under Moyes maybe, but Martinez wouldn't sign a technically deficient striker. Someone's been reading here and tken then Jones posts as gospel
