Silly Season January 2014

To be honest I think Mirallas might have said to Martinez that he wants more opportunities to play centrally so that might be why Martinez is making noises about Mirallas as cover for up front. We still need a striker to cover Jelavic/Kone but with McGeady coming in it does seem like Mirallas might be slotted in where he's needed most across the front 4. It might even play into Martinez' transfer ideas because he might just be thinking that instead of getting an out and out striker he gets a Mirallas type of player in who can play up front but he's just as comfortable anywhere on the forward line.

That makes sense to me. Lets just for a second be optimistic...and I know its slim chances BUT if we have a chance to sign Lukaku on a permanent (we dont know yet and might be a pipe dream) we know he wants to play most games. Getting in another striker as backup that are quality will be extremely difficult as they would also want to play most games if they are quality. However...if we bring in a quality player that can play across the front 4 it opens up a lot of options to allow adequate game time to keep everyone happy. However we already have Mirallas who can play as a striker and have played as a striker for a few seasons at Olympiacos.

Thus McGeady enters the equation...all of a sudden we now have a good winger that can start...allowing Mirallas to start as Striker IF we need him in that position. Deulofeu we must also remember might be here for another season...giving us a lot of options on the wings now. However...IF Mirallas starts as Winger and we need to throw on a fresh striker we still need backup...but only backup. And it might mean that the striker we might sign will be a backup striker...BUT our main backup for starting incase of injury etc might be Mirallas. This changes as to what we might need as backup in the striker department maybe. And might free up finances (by saving of a expensive striker in this window) to bring in Lukaku on a permanent at the end of the season.

Once again...total speculation and possibly a pipe dream BUT just maybe it might be in our managers back of his head. Why did he say to Lukaku when Lukaku said he might consider staying IF we get CL that he must score the goals. Maybe I am reading too much into it all but here is hoping Lukaku is on our long term plan and thus we might ONLY get in a good backup striker but not a quality striker due to Mirallas that can fill into that position for now. OR maybe I am too tired this early morning to think rational...lol

I just have to say, the thought of never seeing Osman or Naismith on the wing again fills me with immense joy.

Welcome to Everton, Aiden lad.

Mirallas prefers playing on the left.. not as a striker. There is no way he'd go and say to martinez he wants more chances playing central.

I am not so sure about that...although I shared this opinion originally. This article made me think a bit...
http://www.fifa.com/world-match-centre/news/newsid/160/168/7/index.html

A quote from it...
In the game of rugby, the No14 jersey is always traditionally worn by a team’s right winger. Similarly, football’s No9 shirt is generally associated with centre-forwards. Having been converted into a right winger at Saint-Etienne, it was during an initial loan spell in Greece that Olympiacos No14 Kevin Mirallas was able to reacquaint himself with his preferred position, that of striker.
Also from the same article...
But the goal I set myself at the beginning of the year was to finish as the league’s top scorer.
And he did achieve his goal of being the leagues top goalscorer...

The bottom line is that we need a striker, otherwise the squad will come out of the window worse off than beforehand. There's no excuse from the club for not splashing a bit of cash, especially when we're involved in a very intense battle for a Champions League place and we're looking to win the FA Cup.

Going off some simple transfer sums we have a good amount of surplus money from transfers, approximately £13m. That is on top of any transfer budget we supposedly had for last summer (McCarthy deal not dependent on Fellaini transfer) and for this January.

Our wage bill may have increased, but so has our revenue this season.

Incomings (As there are no certain figures on loans I've assumed a straight £1m for each):

Lukaku - £1m
Barry - £1m
Deulofeu - £1m
Robles - £3m
Alcaraz - Free
Kone - £6m
McGeady - £1m
McCarthy - £13m

Total: £26m

Outgoings:

Anichebe £5m (rising to £6m)
Fellaini £27.5m
Jelavic £6.5m (rising to £7.5m)

Total: £39m (rising to £41m)

If we get champions league Lukaku is definitely on the cards since apart from wages what will he get from Chelsea that he won't get from us? If he comes here he gets to be the main man at a club that is going places and would be adored by the fans or he can go to Chelsea and sit on the bench with the though that Abramovic might just go and buy another striker to go above him in the pecking order in the back of his mind. At the end of the day Chelsea aren't exactly renowned for developing players whereas we've got one of the most exciting young teams in the premier league with a boss young manager that he (and I) reckons could win the premier league, if he could forego some wages and if we can get the money together you never know.

Martinez is probably thinking of that as a possibility so I reckon his transfer dealings this window will be more about getting the most out of a small squad than anything else. I'm expecting talented utility men who can play multiple positions to come in for relatively small fees because he knows that the squad needs to be rotated to remain effective for the rest of the season so having people who can slot in when needed and sit on the bench providing options when not will be vital, sort of like an Osman or Deulofeu type of player.

You haven't included any agent fees in the sales.

Neymar's 57m fee was 40m agent costs. As Everton transfers (like almost all transfers) are "undisclosed", we have no idea how much money the club actually receive.

So Di Marzio is reporting that we are after Tony Soprano, he's only 17 and a centre back I think.
Worth noting that he is one of the more reliable reporters.

That scouting trip to spain has resulted in us putting forward 2 bids....
Paco as I mentioned before and Oriol Riera
