Silly Season January 2014

I don't think qualifying for the Europa League will make any difference with regards to squad investment. We will still have the lowest net spend in the league, Europa League or no Europa League.

Yep...it'd necessitate a break even approach to player trading in the summer window though...no holding back the cash from RM if EL qualification is secured. That would be an issue for the surplus sucking owners looking to squirrel some cash away.

The Europa League will become serious business again next season with a group stage Champions League place on offer to the winner. Its not the Champions League, obviously, but it becomes more significant than it has been since it was formed.

I think it's important for us on another two levels also:

1. The status of the club is long overdue for a Euro profile boost. A club like Everton has to be playing that level of football.
2. We have to offer European football to existing players and those we want to attract. Wages are a draw, yes, but so too is getting away from the domestic game and having a European campaign.

everybody knows this.

no need to try to make it more dramatic than it already is.

Fans, the paying customers don't know the half of it.

DaveK has been right all along on this transfer window, the only shoe left to drop is when the fans find out the club are looking to spend next to nothing for bodies in the next 2 days. I will repeat that loans and frees.

The fans deserve the truth !!!!!!!

See you all on the otherside of the window.

Q. Do they make a profit from player sales in transfer windows?

Q. Would qualifying for the EL involve squad spending beyond the normal requirements?

Q. Would buying more and selling less eat into/wipe out profits from player sales?

The truth is indeed out there.

These require an a priori assumption to fit your argument. I could craft a similarly cynical argument if you'd like to discuss:

In the US, it is widely known that children from wealthier families attend (on average) better rated colleges and universities. Wealthier families tend to have houses with more bathrooms than families who are less wealthy. Therefore, to improve the educational outcomes of children, families should build more bathrooms in their houses.

people really need to understand this, the month of Feb could be worse than last night, if we do not add a striker by the deadline.

I am not messing about here. Naismith will not get it done for the next month, that includes Swansea.
There's nothing like a defeat to bring you out of the woodwork, bet you're still buzzing.

Since the injuries to Bryan and Lukaku, and since discovering Traore's not even fit, I'm onboard with signing one or two more players this window. But with 2 days left, we don't want to waste money on an overpriced panic buy.

The other option, howver uninspiring it might now sound, would be for Bobby to use the summer window to really build his team. That means sacking off top 4 and even top 6 this season. We consolidate top ten and prioritise getting to the FA Cup Final, thus ensuring a path to Europe.

Bobby signs a good 5 or 6 players in the summer, we lose the loanees, Vellios and Heitinga. Perhaps we sign Barry and get delboy on a second year too. All our injured are back fit for the 14/15 campaign. We'll effectivey be able to field two first-11's, which will help us rotate in our Europa League quest. Martinez will have learnt from his first season in charge of a big club with ambition.

I'd be happy with this, obviously dependent on Bobby spending big money on quality signings in the summer. For if that doesn't happen, then I'm joining the anti-Board chorus.

I just don't buy into this good players aren't available in jan. Look at the RS they bought sturridge and coutinho for a combined 20m. Mata to United. Hell we got jelavic in jan and look at the impact he had on our season back then. The frustrating thing is for once Roberto makes noises about having money to spend, yet we are not spending it. If we don't buy anyone the way injuries are mounting, we won't get in Europe let alone the champions league. After the start we have had that would be criminal. I thought you were meant to strengthen from a position of strength.

i don't think we'll be top 10 candidates purely because we don't sign one or two. we still have a really good squad mate, it would just mean the end of top 4 aspirations in the same way it did last season.

top 6 would still very much be on, let's not go OTT.
