Silly Season January 2014

Why is it unbelievable?

Maybe Martinez has 3 or 4 players he really wants. Maybe the clubs who own those players simply won't sell them midway through the season, unless it's for a big premium on top of what they would be prepared to sell for in the summer. Maybe Martinez doesn't want to jeopardise his summer plans by spending too much of his cash now.

If he got 2 of his targets in now, that might mean he'd not have enough for the others he wants.

It's actually pretty sensible and I'd rather take a long term view on it.

I absolutely agree we need a centre mid as cover for Gibson, but given that Gibson will be back before the end of the season, a loan makes a lot of sense.
I don't have a problem with Martinez's view on this

Well if that's the case what makes you think they will sell in summer cheaper?and if they are in there world cup squad I dont think we will be paying less if anthything prices will go up

I don't even believe the loan part mate!

Loan deal is reliant on shifting Heitinga....who has shown zero inclination he wants to do anything other than sit the window out and walk off with a pot of gold in the summer.

In other words, not happening.

No ^^^ it really is unbelievable...literally unbelievable that Martinez has the money and wont spend.

Won't spend NOW, he is keeping the money to spend in the summer when players come cheaper than now, he also wants to sign Lukaku and/or Traore permanently, if those 2 unavailable he will want another strikers.

The fans will eat him alive (and rightly so) if he spends 15M on an average striker now and Lukaku becomes available in the summer for 15M

This window was and still is an opportunity to get players on loan or very cheap for those whose contracts are expiring in the summer (like McGeady), in the next few hours other players might become available on loan or cheap, we might get couple of players or we might not get anyone, in all cases, if we sign someone permanently it will be a "less than 5M" deal, Martines is keeping most of the money for the summer

I would love Joe Ledley from Celtic and at 800K a bargain but Palace have made the 1st move

26yrs Left sided centre mid with Champions League Ex who will defo add to the squad but Barry might not like it but SOD him he is only on loan

Champions League experience counts for nothing mate - there's loads of absolutely appalling clubs in the CL. So he's experienced in getting smashed by good teams... how's that going to help him here?

We should be looking for a lot better than Joe Ledley.

I reckon Martinez´s judgement on how to work the transfer market is a bit better than the average football fan who writes on here.

Do you think he's had a whole month (and, in fact, months before that) to work the market and not find the replacement for Gibson he himself identified?

And yet we have no replacement for a gaping hole in the heart of this team.

Let's all be sensible here and get behind our manager and not the board who are choking off funds to him.

Myth.

If it turns out to be untrue, then fair enough we can start throwing blame around then.

Essentially, Martinez and everyone close to the club are sticking to this line. If the money disappears and we don't end up doing anything in the summer, then fine. Until then, you're effectively calling Martinez a liar

Now the idea of a striker is clearly absurd in our current climate (why would we want to own a striker?) so midfield is the main one. How much of a boost would it be for the season if we bought a decent one?

Now clearly they won't be an expensive one at this point but signing some south american or spanish or whatever attacking midfielder who is better than osman (benchmark haha) followed by Deufleu Traore and McGeady in the team could really freshen up and galvanise the club for the next 4 months.

One of Moyes's biggest flaws was playing the same team with the same tactics every game got found out far too quickly and only the players who could bring something different (cahill, arteta etc) won games when really we shouldn't have.

We are currently in the danger traore aside of doing the same this season

Have to laugh at people talking about waiting until the summer, we've done that the last five years and it's always the same story.

Saving the Fer money until the summer, then we sell £33m of players on top and only spend £25m.

When will people wake up ??

Your faith in the money being there is based on what? There is no guarantee whatsoever that this manager will get anything like 15M to spend on one player this summer is there? The reality we face based on past experience is that more players will be sold and Martinez will probably have to go through another negative net spend window again.

When will people jump off that loony carousel of giving these charlatans - who spread their lies through the media and these forums via their little troll helpers - the benefit of the doubt?

They are taking the piss out of another manager. Anyone who thinks Martinez is on board with taking on the chin this disastrous months losses and waiting until summer to rectify matters needs sectioning for their own good.

I'm not calling Martinez a liar at all; I'm saying he's hamstrung and has to make the best of a bad situation.

But I was actually referring to the "players being cheaper in the summer" myth really. Looked it up last night; it simply hasn't been true for a number of years, barring the exceptionally high value transfers. There's no evidence whatsoever that players are automatically more expensive in January than the summer.

I mentioned it before but in case it got lost:

What's more likely to push us into the top four?

- Spending now when we're four points off fourth place and with most of our players coming back from injury? One big push to go for it when we're in a relatively strong position.

- Waiting for the summer, waving goodbye to Deulofeu, Lukaku, Traore and potentially Barry, then spending the what.... 15m on turning the team without those four into Champions League contenders?

The second option frightens me to death. Take those four away and we're no better than the likes of Swansea, Southampton, etc.

Scary.
