Silly Season January 2014

Your faith in the money being there is based on what? There is no guarantee whatsoever that this manager will get anything like 15M to spend on one player this summer is there? The reality we face based on past experience is that more players will be sold and Martinez will probably have to go through another negative net spend window again.

When will people jump off that loony carousel of giving these charlatans - who spread their lies through the media and these forums via their little troll helpers - the benefit of the doubt?

They are taking the piss out of another manager. Anyone who thinks Martinez is on board with taking on the chin this disastrous months losses and waiting until summer to rectify matters needs sectioning for their own good.

It's bizarre ain't it? Give the manager a choice to reinforce his squad when chasing fourth and battered by injuries, and he'll damn well take the option.

Suggesting that it's Martinez alone who is deciding to hamstring himself for the second half of the season is just bizarre. It's akin to outright calling the guy incompetent really.

I mentioned it before but in case it got lost:

What's more likely to push us into the top four?

- Spending now when we're four points off fourth place and with most of our players coming back from injury? One big push to go for it when we're in a relatively strong position.

- Waiting for the summer, waving goodbye to Deulofeu, Lukaku, Traore and potentially Barry, then spending the what.... 15m on turning the team without those four into Champions League contenders?

The second option frightens me to death. Take those four away and we're no better than the likes of Swansea, Southampton, etc.

Scary.

Spot on. We won't be strengthening this current team in the summer, we'll be rebuilding it.

Have to laugh at people talking about waiting until the summer, we've done that the last five years and it's always the same story.

Saving the Fer money until the summer, then we sell £33m of players on top and only spend £25m.

When will people wake up ??

Bingo. Stop making excuses for the board, this happens every single transfer window, memory of a gold fish most people on here.

Why do some of you insist on believing the lack of activity is down to the board blocking Martinez?

Look we all know our owners are far from perfect - Kirkby ffs - but fact is Martinez is on record as stating our setup with BK as chairman attracted him to the club. He is a clever chap and came in eyes open.

It's clear he wants to spend whatever he has on the right players and will not be panicked into signings for the sake of it by an injury list. Good for him.

Some on here are obsessed with the transfer market. If used well its a tool to improve any team but just look at the likes of Stoke, Sunderland, Norwich and even Spurs for examples of teams who trade willy nilly for little or no improvement.

Thankfully it appears Martinez is more of a Wenger than a Redknapp. We'll reap the benefits of that in the mid and long term I guarantee it.

I think you'll see more of Bill's little helpers out and about today.

I would love Joe Ledley from Celtic and at 800K a bargain but Palace have made the 1st move

26yrs Left sided centre mid with Champions League Ex who will defo add to the squad but Barry might not like it but SOD him he is only on loan

He hasn't exactly stood out up here. Very ordinary.

Well that'd be the fourteen years of exactly the same thing really. Sort of learning through repetition.

What's Martinez supposed to do, come out and slate the board? He's in the same position Moyes was here.

There's simply no way a sensible manager like Martinez can look at our squad, look at our league position and come to the conclusion that we'll go with what we've got. It's just not an optimal solution, it makes no sense. The brass ring is there to be grasped at, but once again we aren't being backed properly from the board.

Here's a thought - are they content to keep the funds in the account for seven more months to accrue interest?

They are proven not to be trusted in the transfer market and yet you believe some slack should be given to them in their dealings with a new manager - precisely why?

If you had a conversation with Moyes right now, do you think he'd share your belief that Martinez is guiding the club transfer policy to his own liking? "He'll find out how the club works". He might be a lot of things Moyes, but he was spot on there and I bet Martinez is mulling those words over right now.
