Single malts

You guys and Canadians get hammered straight in the poop chute when it comes to liquor tax.

Yea Canada gets it bad. If someone in Canada or even the US in a state like NY lives near a duty free it is the way to go.

I manage a liquor store in NY, not only are the taxes here crazy already but Trumps tarriffs at the beginning of this year have really hit the cost of single malts hard. We're now buying stuff at the cost of what it retailed pre-tariff. Which is a pretty considerable amount since we a) buy almost everything we carry at the deepest level. Meaning if 5 cases or 10 cases gets the best price you do that. And B) the mark up on spirits, especially ones like single malts are on the lower side percentage wise, only about 15-20%. Still an increase like that in retail at one time in is pretty crazy.

His tariffs are absurd aside from just the philosophy of it. Single Malts are hit by it, but most blended scotch is not. It's very bizarre. Bailey's was also hit by it. It just makes no sense.

Its not so much the tax, though I haven't actually checked, but rather a throwback to the old colonial days when everything took 6 weeks a steamer to come via Suez and the was a large percentage price hike that reflected that.
So when economies of scale became more wide spread the savings were not passed down by supplies and retailers (shock horror)

Excessive Transport costs no longer apply e.g. A pair of Levis made in Vietnam.
Vietnam to Brisbane 4500kms
Vietnam to San Francisco 12800kms
Yet the retail cost ratio even allowing for exchange rates is more or less reversed $120 to $40
It is still cheaper to get stuff from US Amazon And pay gst/vat, than it is to buy it on the high st.
Even the Aussie online sellers seem to carry this institutionalized premium - 2@s

Anyway, (@Yank) back on topic - Loch Lomond anybody tried this? Comes in 10, 15, and 18 yrs iterations? or is it, like so many seem to be now just a relabelling con job

I'm only familiar with the Loch 10 and 12. In my market, 15s and 18s are just not the way to go in carrying everyday as people aren't willing to shell out the money regularly.

I'm actual not a huge fan of scotch, more of a fan of Bourbon personally so I unfortunately can't offer much on them atm. I'll talk to some people who are far more in the know and let you know if I hear anything worthwhile.

We do really well with the 10 and 12 because the price is really reasonable. Seems like a fair step up above McLlelland and you don't have to break the bank.

I never understand the Mclelland drinkers.

Is that this one G?

Had my eye on that for a while.

Yes it’s lovely

Nice one, really good read that. When I started getting into scotch the Doublewood was the first 'good malt I bought for myself, been a big fan ever since.

Was gonna hang on to this until we were deeper into the winter, but what the hell, we're top of the league!
Really nice malt, the finish in the amarone cask gives it a rich, red fruit sweetness, cherry smell on the nose, chocolate and dark fruit taste. Very slight burn with a hint of liquorice aftertaste.
And look at that colour with no caramel added, splendiferous.

Thought I'd wade in here with a budget tip. I'm an enormous fan of whisky, be it Scots, Japanese, Welsh, Irish etc. My absolute favourites are those from islay - so much flavour. My favourite is whatever I'm in the mood for - firey smokey, peaty, salty whatever - there is no absolute.

Theyre pricey though. And sometimes you just want a dram. Lidl do some single malts and thd islay one for less than 20 hard earned is pretty good. It lacks the depth and character of the branded islays but is certainly more tasty and characterful than the similarly priced usual blended brands.
