Single malts

I splashed out on a bottle of Glenfiddich 15 recently and frankly, I was disappointed.
I've been drinking 12 on and off for years and strangely, the one I enjoyed the most was one I bought at M+S when on holiday in
the UK in 2018.
I don't understand why one bottle would be any better than another based on where you bought it, but there you go.
It was cheaper than I'm used to paying here in Melbourne, too, and it was a small bottle. 500ml I think, but I could be wrong.

Interesting, I guess we are all different as out of the 12/15/18 yr old Glenfiddichs I prefer the 15 year old Solera Vat. I discovered this on a tour of the distillery about 8 years ago when there was the chance to try all three. Certainly in the UK it’s more expensive than the 12 , but usually around £40 for the 15.

The 700ml 15 was $110 Aust', which is about 60 pounds. I got a heavily cut price, on sale 700ml 12 for 36 pounds a couple of months
ago in my local supermarket and from memory the 500ml 12 at M+S was 12 0r 15 pounds - I forget which but I remember it seemed
very cheap.

I had a bottle of Ballantines when I bought the Glenfiddich 15 and I tried a nip of each to compare and actually preferred the Ballantines. Strange, I know.

It happens with single malts (ie. batch variation), though usually not so much with the large producers like Glendfiddich/Glenmorangie...was likely nothing to do with where you bought it, unless it was stored incorrectly. Some releases specifically list the year and batch number due to variation, like cask strength Laphroaig (yum!).

I also like the 15yo Solera best out of those three.

Taste is entirely personal though.

Cask strength Laphroaig 10yo is bloody fantastic. I had a bottle of batch 3 and it was one of the nicest whiskies I've ever bought. Needed quite a bit of water though, I found, or it was just overwhelming.

Love Laphroaig 10. Got that perfect Big Bang transition from peat sweet you get with the younger Islays. The 18 has been discontinued which is a shame as managed to get a few drams of it at a pretty price in NYC and was stunning.

Islays and Talisker are my favourites, I went to Islay and done the 3 mile walk, well stumble, from Ardbeg to Lagavulin to Laphroaig and if you are a peat slag then I highly recommend it. Out of all the peats if pushed, which none of you are doing during this disgusting whisky nonce humble brag, then Lagavulin 16 would be my one. I do enjoy a lot of the sherry cask finished ones though.

Chug chug look at me thinking I know taste as I sit in my chair reflecting on my life while stroking my beard and drinking highland piss.

I must admit I’m not a bid Islay/ peated fan, but there’s always a bottle of Lagavulin 16 lurking at the back of my whisky cupboard, I’m pretty sure it’s a cure for Covid just waiting to be discovered. Last year my eldest son bought me a nice gift set of two half bottles of different Kilchoman whiskys, . It’s not a well known distillery on Islay but if you like Islay malts it is different from the regular Ardbeg/ Laphroig/ Lagavulin. And of course a nice name to drop in to a conversation if you’re doing another disgusting whisky nonce humble brag, sure to get attention ?

Get on some Ledaig 10 for some peaty goodness, hell of a dram for the price...trust me, Obi-wan. It gives Islay a good wake up slapping. Report back, sir. Bruichladdich Port Charlotte 10 Heavily Peated is a banger, too.

Meant to be tidy, for a blend; Compass Box has a good reputation...will know more by next weekend.
