Single malts

Went to a food and drink festival today and they had the new Adnams Whisky there to try. I had the triple grain. Was pretty good but expensive at £45.00 a bottle I thought.

Somehow missed this when originally posted. Looks interesting. My cousins' husband doesn't really like malts but has said that some English ones he's had have been good.

For me today, Bailie Nichol Jarvie (not a malt, I know but still good) and Dalwhinnie. Sweeter than I recalled.

Difficult to get most varieties out where I live unless you special order them, but here's what my friends and I strung together a few months ago.

Talisker has been, and will always will be, my favorite for ever. Never ever bother with Laphroig 18 as 10 is much better and less costly.

A fine selection.

Where do you live mate?

I live about 2 hours west of Washington DC, near the West Virginia border. It's pretty rural.
Difficult to obtain nice ones mate?

I'd have thought they'd be easy to get hold of over there - no? Or is it simply your rural location?

Just the rural location. Our local liquor stores carry the ones distributed through United distilleries (if I recall the name correctly): Oban, Lagavulin, Talisker, Dahlwinnie, etc. but not much else. I'm certain in nearby cities, especially DC, you can get much more.

I've been trying to track down a bottle of Bruichladdich around these parts but I'll probably have to special order it at some point.

And scotch availability varies by state as each state has their own liquor laws about selling and distribution. For example, in Virginia all the liquor stores are state owned, whereas in other states it's private. This influences what is sold. But in NYC you can probably buy as many different varieties as you can in London or Edinburgh.

Dalwhinnie again all round for me tonight.

Used to work at a place called "monkey jungle" in Miami. I named a tamarin monkey Dalhwinnie, and I had a squirrel monkey named Talisker, and then two marmosets named "hunkpapa" and "ramona" (after Throwing Muses albums). And by "had" I just mean I got to name them but they were zoo property.

Dalhwinnie is intentionally light and airy with an undercurrent of teenage rebellion.

(holy [Poor language removed] I need to stop drinking now...occupying all these threads with my nonsense).

A good tale.

I don't really like too much off the shelf (supermarket) single malts. What you do find though is most supposed single malts are infact blends of single malts yet are still able to be called single malt. For true singles I'd buy from http://www.smws.co.uk 100 pound a year membership and you have an amazing selection to buy from of very limited runs, usually only 2-300 bottle barrels. Yes quite snobby but the best you can buy..
