If it's peaty malts you like then with the old favourites from Islay you won't go far wrong and as has been said Lagavulin 16 is the peatiest of them , with Laphroig 10 good value too. There are some good ones in other regions too, though not so well recognised. About 18 months ago about 40 miles from home I got diverted off the main road , missed the diversion back and poddled along a pleasant B road for about 5 miles which took me past the Ardmore distillery. I'd seen the whisky on sale but never knew where it was. Anyway , next time I saw it , I looked more closely and bought a bottle. It was written as "peated" on the bottle and turned out to be quite a nice peated malt if you like something at the lower end of the peated scale. I guess it would be classified as a "Speyside " malt as its on the Eastern edge of Speyside, worth trying if you want something different from your peated malt.

Caol Ila or Ardbeg for me, out of the powerhouses.

Just took a punt on a couple of Nikka whiskies. 50cl 'from the barrel, and the Coffey Malt. Both very nice, on the softer/feminine side for my taste - i love Islays - but both well worth the money.

C'mon lads you are in your winter time Single Malt period...get drinking and talking.

I'll be back drinking soon as Summer has ended and I am sure in a couple of months I'll dabble in a glass or two..
